Nobody looks a villain to me. There is no rivalries, or multiple meetings that have reached boiling point, or thuggish play .... it's too early. Only been one season together as a team. Not enough has happened yet.

You'd look at Cleveland as a possibility to become one rather soon. Maybe Varejao?

Not many dirty physical players in the game these days.

Kobe.  He's just such a (fill in your own expletive) it's easy to root against him.

Artest might be more annoying but I don't see him as a threat.

I really don't have that much of a problem with Kobe.  He is ultra competitive, incredibly talented, and plays a pretty clean game.  It might also be because I am so sick of everyone bashing him for absolutely no reason all summer long, when all they have to do is point to the fact that he is a Laker, and leave it at that.

I like to call it the "scal backlash theory".  The one where I actually become a Scal supporter, just because so many other people go so far the other way for no good reason.

I have no problem with Kobe the player.  I enjoy watching a super talented player who can do things that no one else in the league can do.  I do, however, think he's a jerk - and a Laker.

Those two things make him a villain.
Yup

See, I just don't think he is that much of a jerk.  I think he has actually been pretty classy (at least in public...I don't know and don't care what he does in private).

He comes across as very smug to me, but as you say I'm not having him over for dinner or anything.  I also find a lot of his personality to be forcefully contrived.  That may be the result of constantly being in the public eye, but so be it.

He can come have dinner at your house some time, not mine (just save the leftovers for me).
Yup

I voted Jackson.  While I respect what he has done, I villianize his coming so close to the titles Red has.

Guys like Kobe I just don't like and do not respect how he carries on off the court.

It looks like China's beloved Kobe is threatening to pull away from the field.

How is this a contest?

The lecherous, avaricious, disingenuous cloven-hooved David Stern is villain number one in the NBA, let alone the Celtics.

Beelzebub has a commissioner set aside for you.... for you..... for YOOUUUUUUUUU!
You definitely get a TP for the Bohemian Rhapsody reference. Great job!!
You know, I actually had him on the list originally and then decided to stick to players and coaches.  I should have left him.  Boo hiss.

Well, let's just say he gets a BYE all the way to the finals.

Woohoo thanks Nick!

Budweiser I like your solution.  Maybe we can have two conferences in the seeding, one being players the other being coaching staff, talking heads and He Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken *cough Stern cough*.

My guess is it would end up as a Kobe vs. Stern showdown.  Can you imagine?  Stern going after his beloved global icon?  That would be like Darth Vader vs. the Emperor but if they were way more evil.  And Darth Vader could dunk.

I don't know. There's no one who can come close to a villain like Laimbeer. Artest can have the potential, if we meet them in the Finals, but not much happened in the last game. If the Bulls were competitive, Nocioni would be a good guy to hate. Maybe too much of a role player...

--------------

Sam Anderson once wrote an excellent article about the pleasure of hating Kobe:
http://www.slate.com/id/2141287

Kobe is not that good or prominent anymore, so the article is a bit outdated, but it's still a good reading (I don't share the POV of the author, btw).

I have to agree with the answer no one. Isiah was evil, but he became a joke.
