These free agents could be good bench players for the Celtics:

Ruben Patterson would be a tough, experienced defender backing up SF - a great need.  Walker looks like an injury waiting to happen.  Scal is not necessary.

Bonzi Wells a very versatile SG.  An upgrade over Giddens and Tony Allen.

Alozno Mourning or David Harrison, C.  More size at backup center instead of short power forwards.

Its too bad our roster is already filled because we still have needs.  I know some of the above have baggage and they wouldn't play for free.  But the roster needs an upgrade if we want to win title 18.

Everyone wants truth on his side, not everyone wants to be on the side of truth.

You are listing the reasons why I feel completely comfortable with them going into the season with the roster they have.  They can give the kids (and Allen) a chance to show that they can do the job, but if they can't, there are still veterans out there who they can bring in if they need to.

Wow I'm really surprised Bonzi hasn't found a team yet, a good rebounding guard is always a nice option to have on a roster.

Ruben is a problem child, otherwise he would be on an NBA roster today.

Bonzi is a scorer, but plays zero defense. Again, the reason he is not on a roster.

Alonzo Mourning lives and is involved in the community in South Florida. He is not leaving unless it is for big money. He is also good friends with Mickey Aronson, the Heat owner. He will wait until the Heat need him, and they will.

David Harrison is a head case, that is why Minny cut him recently. Talented to be sure, but there is a good reason why McHale doesnt want to deal with him.

While I would like to see an upgrade as U say, I dont see a lot of promise in any of these players. Linton Johnson or Michael Ruffin for instance, would be more helpful and they are available. I think we will see a few more guys shake loose in the next couple of days. I choose to be patient and wait for Danny to make a move. 8)

Good Morning all, nice place!  Here is the voting options for a poll we put up in our Celtics Blog over at NESB 2.  I have already noticed a few of the names in this thread so far but tell me what you "Celtic Guys & Dolls" think of the rest of this FA bunch.

   Bonzi Wells
   P.J. Brown
   Smush Parker
   Austin Croshere
   Fred Jones
   Alonzo Mourning
   Darius Miles
   Damon Stoudamire
   Ruben Patterson
   Dikembe Mutombo
   Kirk Snyder

Honorable Mention/White Players that Danny Loves (tongue heavily inserted in cheek)

Luke Jackson, Blake Ahearn, Dan Dickau, Jared Jordan, Eric Piatkowski, Gerry McNammara, Nick Fazekas, Paul Grant and Chris Herren (I had to throw a plug in for a former Celtic and one of my boy-hood Basketball Idols who currently needs positive publicity :(....

The two guys I like the best on the top list are Fred Jones and Kirk Snyder (after Darius Miles). Unfortunately, they are both redundant if Tony Allen and Bill Walker play up to par as apparently expected. (I am feverishly hoping Doc and the rest of the staff are seeing something I dont on that front)

From your 'white guy' list my going away favorite is Nick Fazekas, again it is unfortunate we already have Brian Scalabrine. I do feel like Fazekas wins a one on one with Scal by a handful of points and is a little taller, not to mention much cheaper.

PJ Brown may come back to us in the spring. The fact that he wasnt seen in Boston or in camp this summer at all makes me think he is comfortable at home. I think if PJ wants to play ball again, it is with us where he gets decent minutes and a more than good chance at a second ring.

The rest of both lists are not upgrades for us IMO. 8)

Billysan,  Thanks for your response, man  8) !  According to the "Shamrock Vine" The Celtics are leaning towards Fred Jones and possible returns from P.J. Brown and Darius Miles if a shake-up occurs...  Obviously any of these potential signings can only be made possible by a return to trading by "Danny Dealer".  Don't forget that all other Teams are passing on Jones, Brown and Miles up until this point so we could see a pre-Deadline Deal from Danny Ainge which will ultimately lead to the club signing one or two of the players we are all bandying about in this Thread.

The only guys I'd like to add to this roster are, in order, Mutombo and PJ. Mourning if he's healthy enough to come back, but he's signing with Miami if that's the case.

I'd like to sign DJ Strawberry as a project, but we already have enough of those.

DJ Strawberry is going to be a very nice pickup for somebody.

Mutombo would be a great pickup but I'm sure he won't come here.  I really liked Patterson up until two years ago, but his game is probably in decline.  And Bonzi seems like a pretty good player, but the fact that nobody has signed him is telling.  Unless Mutombo or Mourning wants to come, I'd say forget the rest.

I highly doubt Mourning will be leaving Miami.  He said it was a mistake to leave them a couple years ago.  He is so involved with the community there I really doubt he will leave.  He got his ring.

i agree. who would you rather have, strawberry or giddens? i say trade giddens to someone rebuilding for a (presumably high) 2nd round pick, and sign strawberry.

Isn't Ruben Patterson on the Nuggets? He was on their training camp invitee roster, but I'm not sure whether he made the cut or not.

Anyway, there is no reason to venture into free agency when our roster at 15 appears set. Of course, a future trade somewhere down the line could pave the way for PJ Brown again. Which I think is the ideal scenario.
