Right now, I don't think I can decide which one was greater, tonights comeback from down 7-0 in the 7th, or the C's comeback in game 4.  Right now I am leaning towards the Sox comeback, just because they looked even more done than the C's did (in fact, I had completely given up on them), but they both were amazing.

Can we re-open the apples and oranges thread?

A baseball comeback and a basketball comeback are different animals.  So much more offense can come off defense in hoops.  In baseball they're separate entities.  I'll say the Sox comeback from where they were was more improbable. After being beaten up for the better part of 3 games and facing elimination.

Hell with it, it's fresh in my head, I'll go with the Sox comeback tonight!

WOW!
Yup

I wanna say the Sox cause I just watched it, I also want to say the C's because last season was legendary. I'm copping out, I'll make up my mind in a month, when neither is so fresh in my head.

celtics. sox comeback was impressive, but coming back on the road by over 20 is just bonkers. coming back in basketball absolutely kills you physically, which is why so many teams close huge gaps, but can never take the lead - spend too much effort getting close, have nothing left to win. baseball, not so much.

Since tonight was an elimination game, I'm going with the Sox.

I'd say the Cs comeback against Philly in 1981, when they were down a bunch in the waning moments of game 5, down 3-1, and they came back to win the game and the series.

Then I'd place the Sox comeback in game 5 with the Rays, and then the Cs comeback against the Lakers.

  • Let's Go Celtics
The big differences: Celts game was in the Finals, and they won the series and the championship.

If the Sox come back to somehow win this series and repeat as the champions then I'll probably give them the edge.  Until then, it's what the Celtics did in La La land.

"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

Since chances are the Sox still don't make the World Series, it's the Celts and it's a no brainer

i think the red sox becuase of how horrible they looked the games before, the celtics looked good the game before and we knew that they were better. as jerry remy said, i was already looking at the free agent list for next year.

Sox because it was do or die and it basically happened in what would be in basketball terms the equivalent of a thirty point fourth quarter deficit.

But man I loved them both. We are a spoiled group of sportsfans here in Boston, that is for sure.

As impressive as the Cs comeback was, the Sox comeback was better, regardless of what happens in game 6/7. Unlike the Celtics, the Red Sox were done. Everyone watching the game KNEW it. Even the announcers, who had repeated the whole "anything can happen at Fenway" line over and over again in games 3-5, gave up on the game and had moved on to analyzing a Phillies/Rays World Series. Up unitl the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs, the Sox had been outscored at Fenway by the Rays 29-5. On Sports Center, they said that .6% of teams down by 7 at that point in the game come back to win. It was also the only comeback of its kind in an ALCS elimination game. As I was sitting watching the Celtics before their comeback, I was mad they were losing, but I knew there was hope left to win the series. As the Red Sox fell down 7-0 in in the 7th, I had lost all hope.

The Celtics came back from a large deficit. The Red Sox came back from the dead.

I gotta go with the Celtics for now.
But if last night's game is a turnaround for the Sox and then go on to win the World Series, then I give them the nod.  I guess this is in line with blazingarrow and ma111's thoughts...

C's easily...they were on the road and facing the Lakers in the Championship.

Sox were at home and facing a young team who have been mandhandling them all series....their bullpen imploded and the C's got some fortunate scores with 2 outs.

Sox comeback, hands down. I agree with what other posters said, Sox looked more done and coming back in baseball is a lot harder that coming back in basketball.
