Well, he was going to miss those games anyway. The difference is that he's not going to be paid while missing them. IMO, they shouldn't pay him until he's healthy enough to play, but I suppose that even this fine is too much to the players union.

Not really a big deal.  Small slap on the wrist showing that they wont tollerate players doing things prohibited by their contract.

It will cost Ellis 3 million.  not exactly a big penalty considering his salary and how much he single handedly hurt the team.

Sounds about right.  He won't get paid for the games he misses and he should be ready to go by the time the suspension is over.

Yay Monta
Yup

At least he's not bringing loaded handguns on to planes.

Sorry, the standards are pretty low from where I'm sitting.

In all seriousness, this was a boneheaded move on his part, and lying about it was worse.

The penalty does seem a bit stiff since a player get suspended for 10 games for failing a whatever consecutive drug test (not 100% on the exact figures, maybe someone can correct me).

Quite right, he's young and needs to learn his lesson. Hopefully there wont be an issue again.

it's okay cause he wouldn't have come back from injury until december anyways. however, thats quite a lot of money he's missing now, and golden state's status is looking pretty bad.

Become Legendary.

Hmmm... this injury is not a piece of cake. The Warriors owner didn't rule out the possibility of further punishments, quite the contrary. They signed a mega-contract with him and now there's a good chance that, even if Monta Ellis comes back, the Mississippi Bullet is gone forever. I'd call a $3 million fine a very sensitive and sympathetic penalty.

Warriors had every right to cancel the contract for Ellis breaching it. As much as that would hurt GSW more than Ellis, it would send a definite message to some of these athletes who sign huge contracts that promise a physical performance but then go out and engage in activities that put their being able to physically perform in jeopardy.

If GSW had canceled the contract, the best Ellis could have done was probably a contract a bit below the MLE max. That would have been about a $40 million loss for Ellis. He should be thanking his lucky stars that all he's getting is a $3 million slap on the wrist.

It's nice when someone writes what you were about to write. Saves a lot of time. TP nickaneta

The Warriors were never going to cancel that contract and never should have. It's a good deal that favours the organization, and they'd have to pay far more to replace Monta Ellis than what they're currently paying Monta.
