My point is that he needed to do some off season work to garner minutes and because of guys stepping up a roster spot.  I think he's smart, can help in little ways and is a good attitude to have playing sparingly.  I agree some guys (larry bird) have different body styles, for Scal to take some of Posey's minutes he would need to drop 15 lbs (and don't see he needs that for banging the bds) and work on foot speed.  He needed to add some muscle mass ie. cut in the offseason.  I used to play ball with a guy with this sort of body who also drank like a fish but could run forever.  This means he was in shape but still needed to do more to help the team hence he wasn't around that many years.
ps-i still play in the over 40 soccer league and am maybe not in my playing shape which was really scary but can still really run  ;) for a truly old fart

I don't get why people mention Scal's 'being in shape'. Did he look winded or tired? I haven't seen any evidence of his not being in playing condition. Just because he isn't chiseled doesn't mean he isn't in his top playing condition.

The problem is the way he is playing. It continues to be horrible. He seems to be getting worse, and he wasn't great to begin with. He needs to show something this preseason.

how bout the fact that he was the slowest person in the arena and didn't husstle?

you only get tired if you try.

Re-watch the game. I'll pay you a beer for every time that Scal was the last guy to get back on defense. What went so bad about Scal's? His shots weren't falling, but they were good shots. He had a couple of stupid consecutive turnovers, but in a possession he previously had earned with a steal. My biggest hit on him was that he was a step late on the help defense in a play that Walker forced Young to the baseline and it ended with a 3 point play to Philly.

This is clearly overreacting. A couple of days ago LeBron went like 1pt, 2rebs, 1 ast against Toronto. It's the pre-season...

If there was a guy who one should be worried about regarding physical condition is Miles. He ran like an old man and his defensive slide was slower than mine.

Its useless, some people just are unable to watch Scal and see the positives.  All they see are the missed shots, and his body, but ignore the evidence of his hustle, excellent positioning, and good defense in general.  Some people just have blind spots with certain players...in fact, just about all of us are.  It just so happens that more people have this blindspot with Scal, because of the way he looks, and the fact that his negatives are so exagerated, even if they are not effecting the team as negatively as some other players negatives.

and some people look away from being sealed off consitantly  on rebounds, getting beat on cuts, not being able to shoot, turning the ball over due to lack of awareness of cutters,  and general lack of awareness and conditioning on the court in general due to lack of playing time for the last 2 years because they want to defend him on his "intangibles" and "good positioning".

it just so happens that people have this blind spot with scal more than other players due to him being a good guy.

See how easy it is to dismiss people's views of a player you like when you ignore there points and play up yours?  ;)

I say leave this to the professionals.  The C's have some of the best trainers in the league.  I find it hard to believe that Scalabrine (who is universally known as a tremendously hard worker) is not completely maximizing his potential by working with them.

You are basing your analysis on the way the guy looks, but they are basing their on their work with him everyday.  If Brian Doo comes out and says that Scal needs to work harder to get in better shape than I will believe it.  Until then, I just find these things rediculous.

I don't mean out of shape an old fart sitting around.  I mean out of shape compared to how he should be to actually help the team as possibly the backup sf.  Seeing Posey leave if I was scal i'd come in cut ready to help defend rebound whatever.  He is going with the veteran presence  ???, good help defender, occassional 3 pt threat ?.
Sorry I've defended scal enough, every player has to improve every year.  Explain how he's improved since signing?

My point is, by what scale are you saying he is out of shape?  Being "cut" and being in top NBA shape are completely different things.  Although there is often a correlation between them, they are not the same.  You can be cut and not in good shape, just like you can be in excellent shape, but still have a body like Scals.  That's just how some peoples bodies are.

For years now, people have been saying Scal has been in bad shape, and for years he has been hustling like crazy, being all over the court, and never showing the slightest amount of fatigue.  I also have yet to see any reduction in his exceptional lateral quickness.

they say a picture is worth thousand words.. take a look at scal from NJ and then take a look at him now. the fact that he is older is irrelavant. PJ last year was one of the oldest guy in the league and he was one of the fittest player on the team last year.
i'm just not understanding as to why you are defending this guy.. he is a likable guy i get that, but i don't think he works on his game and conditioning like others on this team. you never hear about scal being on of the first to arrive at practices and stuff.. if people are defending him casue he is white, let's trade for another white guy who actually works hard and can contribute.

I still like the idea of using Scal's contract in a trade next year. The's C's can profit by being a trade facilitator during the Lebron bonanza.

But... he is the weakest link on the team. It doesn't make sense to have 4 PGs, 4 SGs, 4 PFs.

I'm coming around to the idea of cutting Scal at the end of camp.

great point PJ was retired but knew enough that he had to stay in top shape since he isn't a shaq type body
not saying scal would ever be in that sort of shape but he should have looked at the big picture and known he needed to come into camp with an improved body (i'll say that instead of cut)
also agree scals contract is a valuable pc to have, i'd rather have that and him in limited minutes than sam as 3rd string pg when pruitt brings a lot of good things and is still a kid
