Admittedly I don't keep up on this stuff but I did not know he was sick (or that he was 83).  Definitely one of my favorite actors (and he makes yummy lemonade too)

One of my all-time favorites, to be sure.

Really loved him in The Hustler, and Hud, and Cool Hand Luke.  Can't imagine anyone but him in any of those movies.  The guy exemplified "swagger" in those movies before the word even existed.

I remember thinking what a cheap and pale imitation Tom Cruise was in The Color of Money.

Slapshot was a hack movie, still funny at times, and he was great even in that kind of movie.

His food company "Newman's Own" makes great Cereal and Salsa (along with the amazing lemonade and other products).  AND 100% of the money you pay for the products goes to the charities Newman supports.  Now THAT'S a good way to spend your money. 

Do you know other celebrities who are making moves like that?

The pineapple salsa is awesome.  As are the Oreo type cookies.  Actually pretty much everything I've tried of his line has been pretty good. 

I seem to recall reading that his daughter is running the Newman product biz now.  He raised hundreds of millions of dollars for charity through the Newman's Own line.  Pretty amazing legacy.

i once spent some time at his camp in connecticut for sick kids. it was, and still is, a really amazing place. i don't think i ever actually saw any of his movies, but his charity work is really outstanding. sad to see him go.

Well, that just means Mr. Newman
touched your life in a very real
way. That's so much more important
than remembering his movies.
I'm sure Paul would be proud to be
remembered for the good that he did.

One of few celebrities whose legacy outside of cinema rivals his legacy within it.  He didn't contribute to make the paper, or atone for previous public sins.  He did it for his own reasons.

Oh, and The Sting is one of my favorites too :-)
