Drew is in starting 9 in right field. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Kotsay is not an every day bat. Say what you want about J.D., but he was an integral part of the team for the first half of the season (not to mention the Sox getting home field in the World Series, if they make it that far, by virtue of his All Star clutch-ness.)
I really hope he can hold up for the playoff run. Lowell too.
Here's the story: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/09/jd_drew_will_be.html
BTW, I kept getting a spell check error on one word I was trying to use and learned something new (and it a bit embarassing). I llove the definition here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=intrical
yea, hopefully nancy drew can solve the mystery of playing through pain.
seriously, he's admitted his injury often goes days to weeks at a time without paining him, meanwhile other sox are playing with constant pain.
As someone who has dealt with back injuries myself, I have a little more sympathy for Drew. Any sort of disk related injury in the back is very different than most other injury. It is not like a slightly pulled muscle, or a some sort of tendon/ligament issue that you can play through, but just have to deal with a little pain. If you push your back before it is completely healed, you are really risking injuring it again...and it often is worse than the first time.
For a finely tuned athlete, who you want to be playing at as close to 100% when the playoffs come around, it is incredibly important that you don't rush a back injury like that, or else you are risking making things much worse.
Any of you who have tweaked your back, and then decided to still play golf...only to find that the only thing that did was make you go from limping around a little to being bedridden for a week know what I am talking about.
With that said...this guys history doesn't help the perception here.
