Drew is in starting 9 in right field. Hopefully he can stay healthy.  Kotsay is not an every day bat.  Say what you want about J.D., but he was an integral part of the team for the first half of the season (not to mention the Sox getting home field in the World Series, if they make it that far, by virtue of his All Star clutch-ness.)

I really hope he can hold up for the playoff run.  Lowell too.

Here's the story: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/09/jd_drew_will_be.html

BTW, I kept getting a spell check error on one word I was trying to use and learned something new (and it a bit embarassing).  I llove the definition here:  http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=intrical
Yup

yea, hopefully nancy drew can solve the mystery of playing through pain.

seriously, he's admitted his injury often goes days to weeks at a time without paining him, meanwhile other sox are playing with constant pain.

Hopefully it's for real this time.  It will be good timing to come back a week before the playoffs.  Gets some swings in, get rid of as much of the rust as possible.

I think Drew is huge for us to be successful in the playoffs.  We need his bat in the lineup.  He'll be rested, hopefully he can get back into game shape in the next week.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

As someone who has dealt with back injuries myself, I have a little more sympathy for Drew.  Any sort of disk related injury in the back is very different than most other injury.  It is not like a slightly pulled muscle, or a some sort of tendon/ligament issue that you can play through, but just have to deal with a little pain.  If you push your back before it is completely healed, you are really risking injuring it again...and it often is worse than the first time.

For a finely tuned athlete, who you want to be playing at as close to 100% when the playoffs come around, it is incredibly important that you don't rush a back injury like that, or else you are risking making things much worse.

Any of you who have tweaked your back, and then decided to still play golf...only to find that the only thing that did was make you go from limping around a little to being bedridden for a week know what I am talking about.

With that said...this guys history doesn't help the perception here.

It would be great to have him back. Redsox lineup isn't the same without him. We probably would first in the AL east if he played. Hopefully, he really is back. We really need him in the playoffs.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

yea, my main problem isn't a some sort of belif that it doesn't hurt, and i have tweaked my back out pretty good. but, seriously, when your admitting to the media that it sometimes "feels fine while running and swinging, but every couple days ill tweak it" while some of your teamates are playing with;

1. a ligament barley attached to their hip
2. numbness in their arm
3. a wrist that isn't quite clear of "you should have surgery territory"

then you need to get in the lineup. if you tweak it a bit, come out of the game. but don't tell me he couldn't at least play every other game.

Well my point was with a back injury like that, it will feel better for a couple of days...but that does not mean that it is healed enough that you are not still risking making it much worse by pushing it.

Disk problems are not about dealing with the pain, they are about allowing it to completely heal.

and what are torn ligaments, possible minor nerve damage, and tendon structure damage? chopped liver?

I'd give the guy a bit more breathing room if he wasn't a known injury rider. there's a reason he's never bothered to get himself in the lineup more than 133 game a year, by far his high.

he's a wuss.
