This is America, he has the right to share his opinion without being treated as if he committed a crime.

No.  This is America.  He has the right to share his opinion.  Others, though, have the equal right to point out what an idiot he is.

are you all kidding? this guy is refreshing for no other reason than that he is candid - something that the dominant majority of sports professionals aren't. is he a great role model? probably not. does he bleed red white and blue? apparently not. but hey, dude's got a right to say what he's got on his mind. i'd like to hear out why he thinks that before i pass any judgment on him.

Refreshing?  He got caught by a camera in the stands.  It wasnt like he stood up and made comments to the media.

But yes, I would really love to find out why he feels that the fact he is black means he 'doesnt celebrate it'.  (That is not a racist comment at all, simply wondering the extent or reasoning behinf his thoughts)

oh, and the candidly refreshing remark was more geared towards the interview where he admitted to using pot - since the thread is titled "josh howard is an idiot - again." I was bringing in the previous stuff as well. apologies for not making that clear.

so this is three posts in a row, and for that i apologize, but i really do disagree (which, i'm sure, we can all agree is my right). this is the united states of america, where we are all entitled to our opinions. i do not believe, however, that we are entitled to petty name calling. josh howard gets to think what he thinks, you can think differently, but we all have got to be able to speak to one another rationally in order to come to any kind of real meeting point.

if people just fly off the handle, which, in my estimation, you have done, and start name calling without really talking about why you disagree with the man, then you're not really doing much of anything at all - except being silly, much like josh howard.

He's a wannabe. Pretending he really thinks he's being oppressed in his country or even cares about what oppression other blacks go through. Speaking as an African-American myself, 1-man minstrel shows like this make me sad. Because these people aren't about anything. Howard is artificial like Splenda. He's a "studio gangsta". People like Howard aren't making statements about their beliefs. They're just flossin in front of their friends trying to get a laugh and trying to act hard...but they're not.

Again, as Roy said, nothing wrong with being retard, just don't be surprised when you get called on it.

But you don't even know him.  All we know about him is that he doesn't watch what he says.  For all we know he could have a very good reasoning for thinking what he thinks.  He also could not.  We just don't know and I think it is unfair to judge him based on a few comments.

I agree with raygus.  I hate how all athletes are so careful about what they say.  I wish they would speak out more often and say what they really believe whether stupid or not.  Athletes are way to afraid of saying something controversial or political that they don't say anything at all.  Have you ever heard Dwayne Wade speak?  He sounds like a robot.  Every single interview is exactly the same.  I realize he is being a true professional but I wish he would say what he really believes more often.  That's all Josh Howard was doing.  It was certainly unpatriotic and unprofessional but it was also a little refreshing.  We have no idea why he believes that and I bet you there are a lot of other basketball players who feel the same way but won't say anything because they are too worried about what people might think.

Personally, I can't find out a way of doing that without violating or circumventing the forum rules on political discussions. Otherwise, I'd gladly explain why he's a retard.

Personally his comments on pot didn't disturb me much. I'd call them candid, but not smart to say PR wise, especially considering what happened to the Mavs. Throwing a birthday party in the middle of the playoffs especially after your coach asked you not to, also not smart. Then racing someone in the summer, going in the 90's, so me 4o miles over the speed limit, once again not that smart. Saying what he did DURING the anthem, in addition to all the other nonsense he was speaking on the video, once again not smart. Doing 4 public not smart things in one Summer = idiot. Maybe stupid is a better word, but that's just semantics.

Mark Cuban isn't happy, but his response is pretty funny.

Quote
"That said, we will be going through some advanced communication-skill sessions together this training camp," Cuban said Tuesday. "I have explained to him that cellphone cameras are not your friend and that what you think you said on camera is never what people will hear when it shows up on YouTube or TV.

"There is only one universal response that works: 'Both teams played hard.' "

He is an idiot. A millionaire role model who says and does things like that can only be considered an idiot. If he were on the Celtics, personally, I'd want him gone from my team asap.

First of all what do you all think of Maxwell? This guy wanted the celtics to trade paul pierce for this idiot before we did the kg trade. And i am not sure that booing is the propper response for this idiot. My suggestion is that when ever Josh Howard touches the ball when the Celtics play Dallas at the garden the crowd should stand up as 1 and chant USA USA USA

I hope you appreciate the irony in defending Howard, but criticizing members of this blog for "fly[ing] off the handle".  It's not like Howard gave a well-reasoned, intellectual response, and people attempted to shout him down.  Instead, he made an idiotic statement that stereotyped an entire race of people, and attacked our country (the ideals of which allow him to earn a multi-million dollar paycheck).  If people want to point out their disagreement with Howard's statements,  more power to them.  I'm sure people could elucidate more on their feelings, but the rules of the blog restrict that, unfortunately.

(Also, as johnnyrondo pointed out, Howard has a track record of saying / doing idiotic things.)

Sorry not buying it. It wasn't as if Josh picked this moment or this gathering to get on a pulpit or was asked about his beliefs. His comments were barely even intelligible. For God's sake did you even hear what he said? "I don't celebrate this [expletive], I'm black..." I'm sorry who says this?? Like being black means you're pre-disposed not to honor the Star-Spangled Banner, or at least shut your mouth and show some respect at an event when it's being sung? Most all of the other people in that video had no problem doing that. And what the hell does "being black" have to do with ANYTHING?? Again, I'm an African-American and I have no clue what in Sam Hill he's talking about. Sorry, I don't listen to minstrels. They make the rest of us look bad. Especially the ones if cornered have nothing to say and no way to back up their ramblings. If it wasn't obvious to you the guy was playing up to the camera then I'm not sure what else to say to you. Stevie Wonder could see that.

I don't know how many other African-Americans frequent this board but surely if there are at least one or two of you know what I'm talking about.
