Maybe it's just me, but I find that pretty offensive.

Perfect, I've always wanted to ask someone who gets offended by swearing why they actually get offended. So, why does it offend you? I've never understood, unless it's directed at you, why take it to heart?
Well, since you ask, I suppose I'm obliged to answer. As Jsaad said in one of his posts, he considers saying something about a particular race, sex, religion, etc. to be offensive. Society's moral compass today seems to be all about political correctness. 20-30 years ago, most people didn't think twice about saying words like "queer," "Jew," "n****," etc. The societal morality back then wasn't concerned about those things. Times have changed.

Rather than disparaging a race or religion, the F-word is a debasing and disparaging reference to sex. I suppose many people don't think of it that way at all - yes, some of the dictionary slang definitions for the word don't reference sex at all. But the origin of the word most clearly derives from sex. Some people (yes, including me) still consider sex to be a sacred and holy union between a husband and wife. The F-word is a frontal assault on the sacredness of that union - it takes something precious and trashes it into the gutter. It's a harsh, mean-spirited word that engenders absolutely nothing positive or of value. The word itself is a textbook definition of "offensive."

I don't expect anyone to back me up on this, but since you asked, I answered. Hope that helps you at least understand the perspective.

I respect your position but i would like to add:

- According to the OT "Jew" was used to describe someone from Judah, a nation under the kingdom of Israel. Not sure who would find that offensive...

- Queer is differing in some odd way from what is usual or normal

Jsaad, being Jewish and having an opinion on this, I'd like to get into it, but alas, I think we're starting to tread on thin ice here.  Lets leave Hoops explanation as self explanatory and well said and get back on topic.

I really am itching to explain though ;) (it's nothing bad) - redz

This post has really got me thinking actually...

Not to get into politics here, and I agree times have changed but the follow up question is...

Were you more comfortable when crapping on race, sexual orientation and religion were more acceptable?

Redz, my point is subtle but I think valid.

It's all about context, I apologize if my video offended anyone...

Jsaad, I don't think you were being offensive, I just don't see how we can have a discussion about offensive terms on here without getting into areas not allowed on CB.

But yes, the context is the key.

Goodness what have I started.

In response to Hoops, thanks for the explanation, I understand your stance on the matter regarding the f-word, but there are people who are repulsed by all swear words. That I don't understand. I don't use swear words in every day language, although occasionally to express feelings - during basketball games for one - if you want to look down on me for that fair enough, that's your prerogative.

As for what Jsaad said, I don't want to get into politics either but I've got a firm stance on race, be it colour, nationality, religion or anything else. I'm not Jewish, but can see why it, or words other derogatory terms, can be offensive.

CM, You misunderstood my post. I'd PM you but I'm wrapping things up here at work.

Also, I was only apologizing on the thread for the video that offended hoop.

Well, since I was really the one who took the thread towards thin ice, I'll wrap it up by saying just a couple of quick things. First, Jsaad - I appreciate the apology - I wasn't personally offended as much as I was caught off guard by your original characterization. Anyhow, no worries. I personally try to refrain from crying foul over f-bombs and other swear words. And I respect free speech.

And to CM, who originally asked the question - yeah, some people are offended by all swear words. I'm not sure how to explain that one. I guess everyone has a different threshold. There are some words that I don't personally use, but I'm not particularly "offended" by them. I may think they're a little "low brow," but not necessarily offensive. Just my take...

Thanks for keeping it real, everyone. Now I'll get out of your thread and let you guys enjoy the humor...
