Quote
Baltimore native and three-time NBA champion Sam Cassell said today he plans to become an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics after playing one more season.

Cassell, a 38-year-old guard who was part of the Celtics' title run this year, told a reporter about his plans shortly before speaking at a City Hall news conference. "This is my last year playing with the Celtics," he said. "Next week, I'll sign the contract."

After finishing the 2008-09 season, he plans to exercise an option to join the coaching staff. "I am playing this year," he said. "After that, I have the option to do coaching for them."

My reaction is similar to one of Scooby Doo's: "errrf?"

You just don't get enough Scooby Doo quotes these days, I mean other than " I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids" but come on, we've all heard that one a million times, it's refreshing to see a new Scoob reference.

Nevermind a TP, I'm giving you an SS.

But I regress.  As for Cassell, my gut feel is, if he is indeed signing, there has to be a bigger plan regarding the excess bodies.  I am trusting management.

CM I was just wondering if you'd be interested in buying a bridge over some swa....real estate I have for sale.

Come again?

Was just thinking if you're actually buying that song and dance about a training camp with us magically changing him into of a team player opposed to the gunner he actually is I figured you might be interested in buying something else even more "credible"...like the magic bullet theory.

The good Sam, I welcome back. The bad Sam, not so much.

I have no real problems with it. Better signing than Paddy.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

It's not really "buying into" anything. He's going to have a pre-season under his belt, he's old enough to follow a team concept and willing enough to embrace his role as an understudy.

Sorry, was there another PG with three rings - or half of Sam's talent - on the market that you had in mind? If so, I retract my statement.

I'd just sign him as an assistant coach. Tell him if Pruitt's not looking ready to go by the all-star break that he'll have a spot on the roster. That way he could practice with the team on a regular basis without using a roster spot.

Three rings be [dang]ed. If Danny needs a 6 foot guy to dribble the ball down the court and throw up a brick they could've signed me, you or most of the posters on this blog. But you certainly got the "old" part right. Sam is ready for the glue factory right now. I'm surprised he's not peddling his services on Antiques Roadshow these days. His defense is non-existent(MUCH worse than House and Pruitt), his offensive game consists of hitting 2 or 3 mid-range jumpshots in a row(if you're lucky) and freezing the rest of his teammates out while he goes 1-on-5.

But as for the market, no need. As far as I'm concerned our PG situation has already been addressed. No need to bring back Barbaro.

These days Sam has as much chance at running the point effectively as O'Bryant. And we already got O'Bryant.

Not trying to be incendiary, or maybe I am, but how do all of you "In Danny We Trust" guys feel about this positive move? I mean, you have to admit, Cassell has more talent than any other player that Danny has brought aboard this off season. You have to be loving this, right? Or are you going to start being negative?

Only person I see runnin their yap is Sam. No surprise cuz he's been runnin it since last year. I'm still not unconvinced Sam isn't being "punked" right now.

To be honest, I have to see what the line up is on the first of November before I can answer this properly.  There's a ton of bodies right now and I have to have see some of them perform and know where they'll end up before I can offer judgment.  Until then, it's "In Danny I Trust" regarding this move.

I still say "What move?" There has been no announcement. No word from Danny. Just Sam runnin' his mouth.

Well, that doesn't  speak well for Miles' future here, since we're capped at a 15 man roster.  Cassell would make 16, with only one of those so far being non-guaranteed (Miles).

I guess what I don't understand is, if they planned on signing Cassell, why bring in Miles at all?   If he  works  out, what do they do?  Is there a potential trade in the works?   Are they going to dump Pruitt?  I don't get it.

Well, I wonder if one rookie goes to NBDL, does that make a spot for Cassell or Miles?

Nope, that player if it's Walker or Giddens still stays on the Celtic's roster while they're playing for out DLeague team.

Thanks.

Eddie House must be ticked off.
"If somebody would have told you when he was playing with the Knicks that Nate Robinson was going to change a big time game and he was going to do it mostly because of his defense, somebody would have got slapped."  Mark Jackson

They're probably just as happy about it as the "we need to load up on vets because none of our younger players will contribute anything this year" crowd. It's a bold move by Ainge to unite both fringe groups.
