Long after many had almost given up taking chances on him, J.R. Giddens is still willing to take chances on himself.

The latest example occurred last month when the then-unsigned Celtics top draft pick spent his days working out in New Mexico and Dallas instead of the team's Waltham training facility. Though contracts are fairly standard for NBA first-rounders, Giddens was without a deal while most of his fellow draftees had their pacts wrapped up in a matter of days.

The unusual delay raised questions about whether the C's really wanted to invest three guaranteed years in the surprise pick. Just when things seemed to have turned around for the 2003 McDonald's All-American, familiar doubts about his future simmered once again.

So what did the New Mexico University alumnus do? He went out and got a bright green shamrock tattoo behind his left ear.

"People were saying that to me," he acknowledged of the risk involved. "But I knew in my heart it was right. I felt everything happens for a reason. This was destiny and I am a Celtic now."

Two months after he gushed at the thought of wearing a Celtics uniform, Giddens finally signed. This week, he was in Waltham working out with new teammate and fellow rookie Bill Walker, and fulfilling the destiny that hardly seemed assured not long ago.

I hope it works out with the C's. I hear getting tattoo's removed are painfull...

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I read another article on JR Giddens today about his "bad reputation" and such(Don't remember if it was the Herald or Milford Daily News). I feel like I have read the same article over a dozen times now. Is the offseason that dreadful that they're just printing off the same article to keep us interested?

Ya, what's the downside?  He gets traded a few times, then becomes an All-star who wins a championship?  Chauncey would say go for it!

well, if giddens thinks he need to put a tatoo behind his ear for each team he plays for, he obviously doesnt envision himself being traded more than once.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I don't think Giddens is saying that he thinks he won't be traded, he just paying homage to the team who gave him a chance. From all I read about his past, he should feel lucky to be drafted at all...

Giddens should be a good nba player he's tough and makes little mistakes, not a good shooter but a pretty good slasher and penetrator.
If Giddens had Bill Walkers offense couples with Giddens defense I would say Giddens would be an All star !

Terrific athlete - but he lost a golden opportunity to play for a NCAA champion in Lawrence, KS. He could be a sixth man this year as a rookie.

Well, if he stayed at Kansas he wouldn't have played for a national championship, unless he was able to put them over the top in the 2007 tournament.
