Hey...I just moved into my dorm at college, and it's the second day of orientation. I have been, unfortunately, woken up at 3 am b/c of my neighbors inviting over a bunch of loud, obnoxious people who can't seem to talk quietly and instead yell at each other...anyways, they're blasting music as well and now I'm sure i won't be able to sleep until their little mini party is over...this has been going on for more than 30 min, and so now I'm writing this post.

I don't wanna talk to them now, but plan to talk to my RA tomorrow....just needed to get this off my chest...i can understand that they might wanna celebrate, but am very annoyed at their blatant disrespect for everyone else around them.

it's only orientation, you should join them! I'm sure they'll quieten down when your semester actually starts.

Dorm walls are very thin, from my experience. At least it was just partying! I agree, join up, make some friends, I found the friends I made my 1st year in a dorm (assuming you're a freshman) are the ones I still have today, 8 years later (btw you're making me feel old)

Don't be the guy that reports them the first week.

And get used to loud noises at odd times.

If you are going to talk to someone go talk to the people themselves.  Don't go to the RA or any Security people.  They'd appreciate it much more if you and your roommates did it yourself.  If you get them in trouble they'll probably just be louder the next night.  College is a lot more fun when you get along with all your neighbors.

People are inconsiderate; don't expect that to change.  If it becomes an ongoing problem, you can always request to change rooms / dorms.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
after 5 years of college dorm life, i have one bit of advice: get used to it.  i agree with the other poster that it would not be wise to report them...sad to say, you'll get labeled and they might make your life worse.

college life is very different than what you've grown accustomed to...the idea of "good" sleep is a thing of the past.  your eating habits, sleeping pattern, and schedule will be turned upside down.

just be patient, relax a bit, make some friends, and keep a good attitude...

moved off campus my junior year, but as much as I hated the noise and mess I look back at my years in the dorm as pretty fun times.

Adapt and roll with it - very tough to do, but worth it.  Just don't compromise your core values.
I love my kids, call me a sap - it's true.

Sorry man. We had some hotties over so we decided to keep the music going so they would hang around a little longer.

TP, that's exactly what I would do. Either that or join them.

Oh man you would have hated living next to me...

Like everyone said, I wouldn't report them...you don't want the dorm hating you...in a dorm anything goes and you could end up with a peanut butter and jelly door handle...or some abstract art via shaving cream as a decoration...or a urine puck slid under your door...or....you get the point...

Enjoy it while you can, people up at all hours of the night is what's so great about college, always someone to talk to or something to do. Plus once school starts I'm sure they'll keep it to a reasonable level.

I am a light sleeper.  After a few years at UCONN someone told me about ear plugs.  They work, but what really helped was "white noise."  I bought a large box fan and ran it when I slept.  No problems after that!

Make friends with your neighbors and kill them with kindness.  Remember....."You can catch more flies with honey than with vineger."

Peace,
