Another Miles question (I'm sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere - i haven't seen it discussed yet)

If Miles plays 10 games for the celts it will pack 8 million onto portland's salary cap giving them less to work with next year.

It would seem that every game that Miles plays for the celts would make Portland nervous.  Do you think that Portland would trade us someone good for Miles to prevent him from getting to 10 games played and screwing with all that cap space they have amassed?

I think that if Portland traded for Miles at this point, only for the purpose of refusing to allow him to enter games, his agent would immediately file a union grievance for interfering with his livelihood and affecting his future earning capacity.  The league would also have the ability to step, as it has the authority to prevent any team from circumventing the salary cap or the intent of the CBA; this scenario would seem to fit under that category.  I also think that it would damage the reputation around the league of both the Celtics and the Blazers.

Theoretically, it's possible, but I think it's very doubtful.

Probabaly not and I wouldn't be surprised if the NBA changed the rule for Portland. I heard they were going to challenege the rule and it should. I'd rather have a small market team playing in the finals so I don't have to hear Kobeaners all over the internet spewing hate all the time.

I think that the Blazers are owned by one of the richest men in the country, and this whole financial issue is irrelevant.

Take a look at one of his boats

Yeah, Paul Allen is loaded.  There's a difference between having money and having cap space, though.  Regardless of how rich their owner is, the Blazers can't sign a free agent for more than the MLE without cap space.

The just pay a luxury tax if they go over, right? He could sell one of his other two mega-yachts, pay the luxury tax, and with the left-over money throw a legendary party for $40 million or something.

No.  The salary cap and luxury tax are different.  Basically, if your team is over the salary cap, you can't give other team's free agents more than $5.5 million per season (it's more complex than that, but that's the shorthand summary.)  Without Miles on their books, Portland will have more than that to offer (although I'm not sure what the exact amount will be).

The salary cap is roughly $59 million.  The luxury tax is a different number, and is set around $71 million.  Teams that go over that threshold have to pay a dollar-for-dollar penalty.

You don't get as rich as he is by spending good money after bad like that.
