Thanks for the link. That was a great interview. Bird will always be my favorite basketball player. I lived and died with Bird's Celtics teams during his entire career. Like Magic said, there will never ever be another Larry Bird.

Bird seemed very modest in that interview, almost like he was instructed by the NBA not to down play the accomplishments of the Redeem Team.  Or maybe since he's a GM, he wants to butter up all the current stars.

My exact sentiments.  The guy never let you down.  KG has been the guy closest to LB, from a presence and leadership perspective.
Michelangelo is a, first of all, talented man. But he’s also crazy, because there’s no way I would take six years painting a ceiling that’s at least 30 or 40 feet high in the air. But I guess you do what you’ve got to do, and I just want to commend Michelangelo.- Glen Davis

From what he said prior to this year's Finals, Larry seems to believe very strongly that he had his time to shine, now it's time for a new generation to get the accolades it deserves.  That's why he didn't do a lot of promotional stuff for the Lakers vs. Celtics series, and I think that's why he didn't put down the 2008 team.  He's showing a bit of class and shining the spotlight on others.

I agree, and it very refreshing. Larry "gets it"

Wow!  The humble Larry Bird!   His legacy is set in stone anyway, but never heard him give props to Charles Barkley or Danny Ainge before...Could never tell if he was ribbing them, or if he was serious.  Good to know he does have high regard for them.  Loved that '84 team, all great players, but have to admit that D.J. was my favorite....and the "Dream Team" was truly that...

Anyway, thanks for the post....great interview...

In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue... natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No. Not vengeance. Punishment.

I agree with both of you. Larry knows the spotlight should shine on the current stars.... but he also had his NBA executive hat on.. and would loooooove to lure one of the redeemers to Indiana.  :P

  • You know my methods, Watson.
you know, larry really surprised me, when at the end of the interview, he stated how much he "loves the action" of being a GM.  i honestly saw him as a guy who would walk away once he finished coaching (and i was very surprised when he agreed to coach the pacers in the first place).  he is very committed and it must be killing him to see a team of nitwits get into all kind of personal trouble off the court.

but i was surprised when he talked about his commitment to putting together the pacers.  sounds like he studies the nba, college, and foreign game more than i thought he would...just didn't really see him caring to that degree.

Thanks a million for the link.

I love Larry Bird.

In recent years I've started to wonder if he still had a special place in his heart for us and he does.  It was different listening to a kindler, gentler, older Larry.

Thanks Larry...I miss you.
