Let me first say I don't know what kind of defender he is, but the OKC (?????) just waived Donyell Marshall and he is a more than decent player (who never got a fair shake in Seattle/OKC).  I wouldn't recommend claiming him off waivers (salary is too high) but after that signing him to a minimum deal, is this a good idea.  Looking at the checklist for backup SF that people seem to be running with he has all the criteria except for 1.

Defense??? (can anybody answer this??)

Plays both forward positions  (Yes)
Can hit the three             (Yes)
Tall and long (Yes he's a legit 6'9)
Good rebounder (Yes)
Good teammate (Yes)

If you wanna add another one, he played college ball at UCONN (him and Ray overlapped there for 2 years I think)

Thoughts???

He's not a good defender

He's 35 and has declined every year

He can't even hit the three anymore.

I hope, if we need another player, we can do better.

He is not a good defender.  He is old and way passed his prime.   He can still shoot a somewhat decent 3 (kind of) and your right he is a good teammate.

I wouldn't mind picking him up for the minimum.  Although I think Scal is better in the exact same role.

I don't know what he has left in the tank, but the last time he played any meaningful games I was impressed with him during Cleveland's run to the Finals in `07.  He actually showed some willingness to get in the paint and bang a little (for the first time I can remember him doing so).
Not sure that he'd add much at this point.  He seems like he's a decent team guy though and wouldn't detract anything.
Yup

For his career, Marshall shoots 34.8 percent from three, though he has had a couple of very good campaigns from there.  His last three seasons: 28.3, 35.1 32.4 percent.

He doesn't have the quickness at this point to be a stopper at the three, and according to 82games, he's also spent most of his time over the past couple of seasons at the four.  I'm not all that interested.

I am pretty sure Scal is better than Donyell right now.

Would have loved this idea a few years ago. He would bring a good vet presence but he is pretty washed up at this point. Rather find a legit center or back up pg than Marshall...If we are going for a forward im still hoping for Darius Miles.

Donyell Marshall is finished I'm afraid. Age has robbed him of his athleticism and skills. He's not even an NBA level player anymore, although he may hang on as a 14-15th man type, an elder statesman who'll show the youngsters how to play. He can't be in a rotation, he's too bad a player, he's done.

D Dub is right when he says Scal is better than Donyell Marshall.

It'd be kinda like bringing back Toine: he's too slow to guard the 3 and not quite the banger to be the big man we need down low.  If Powe and/or Davis were 7 feet tall, I'd be more interested in bringing in player like Marshall/Walker.  However, as they're not 7 feet tall, we really don't need more undersized/perimeter-oriented big men.

Donyell Marshall Anyone?

Just released by Oklahoma City, this is a veteran we should take a close look at IMO. If this guy is healthy, he certainly solves the 'Shooter off the bench', 'Back up small forward for 15mpg', 'Veteran presence' and is a 'decent rebounder' if his career numbers mean anything.

OTOH, if he is washed up he is a waste of time. He was a decent bench guy for Cleveland the year they went to the finals. Last year traded to Seattle/Oklahoma City in the Wally/Delonte deal. He did not get much run last year and apparently is not in the long term plans.

I certainly do not think he is a replacement for Posey by any means, but he could make it easier to send Bill Walker to the D league or overseas for a year. He might make Powe or Davis expendable as well. He would definitely be an upgrade over Scalabrine in any case. 8)

If this was 3-4 years ago I would say yes. But he's 35 and washed up now kind of Michael Finley. You know he made 12 3-pointers in one game to tie a record. Anyways he was released for a reason!

We don't need another undersized power forward.

I think he is listed as a SF that can also play PF. He is a legit 6'9", hardly undersized. He was regarded as a decent perimeter defender at one time. I confess I dont know anything about his current health or conditioning level. I do think that we should at least inquire based on the skill level he has shown in the past. It cant hurt to ask can it?

Invite him to Training Camp. If he doesnt have anything to offer, then he walks away.  8)
