As I prepare to head off for the weekend, I thought I'd kick out a few thoughts pertaining to the Beantown 9.  So in no particular order.....

*
This weekend Fenway plays host to a minor league double header, truly a great take for anyone who likes the Sox, Fenway but can't afford or get regular season tickets.  Highly recommend it.

*
The Brian Giles waiver claim perplexes me.  Giles, 37 year old outfielder who is putting up fair numbers, hasn't been putting up the big digits since the steroids scandal broke wide open in 2004.  I am sure it's simply a coincidence.

*
If the Sox do sign Giles, does that mean they have a team lined up for Coco?  5 outfielders seems like a lot to me.

*
Manny is batting .565 w/ 4 homeruns since going to LA.  I guess those hamstrings are feeling better.

*
Carl Everett's curly haired boyfriend had an interesting piece in the Globe today.  He indicated that MLB is looking into the possibility that Manny acted up to get out of Boston so that Scott Boras would be able to negotiate a new deal for Manny and therefore get a piece of the new deal.  Um, ya think???

*
Every time I think the Sox are destined for 3rd this year, another Yankee gets injured.

*
If, if, if....I said if Colon can pitch the way he did before getting injured, the Sox could be a contender.....if.....

*
The Sox desperately need hitting production from the center field, shortstop and catcher positions.  Almost a certain 3 outs.

*
The loss of Gordon Edes from the Globe continues to erode what was once a sports section with no equal.

*
Blame me if he does poorly tonight, but I am overwhelmingly impressed with Jon Lester.

*
Now with Manny gone, can we all agree that the greatest Red Sox player to wear #24 will always be Dwight Evans?

*
www.shermfeller.com has a few incredible soundbites that will make your day.

*
Looking at Terry & Bill, I would have to say Doc wins for best dressed coach.

*
The day Boston loses Pesky is going to be a very sad day.

That's it for now..............
I love my kids, call me a sap - it's true.

I agree with most of what you said, especially lester, the kid has been lights out this year and hopefully he can keep it up.

However i disagree with your comment about shortstop and center field being guarenteed outs...Lowrie has been hitting really well since filling in for Lugo and has had some key hits, both RBIs in the sox 2-1 win in 12 innings against A's last week, and Ellsbury looks to be turning it around too after a great series agains KC.  Granted its KC but it has to start somewhere

I have a thought...why is it that the traditional media feels the need to demonize every sox player whom leaves ? Or is the media so in bed with the Sox that they feel the need to justify all player moves? Or is it just a Boston thing...just think of all the ex-sox players that got battered by the press as they were leaving...Wade, Roger, Pedro , Lowe, Nomar, Manny..etc...heck even Brady Anderson felt their wrath..I'm sure you guys that have lived here all your life can come up with more..I grew up in NYC and thought the press was brutal..now I realize that, by comparison, they were Cub Scouts..

Giles has used his trade veto power and will not be a Red Sox.  Don't know why we are on his list of teams he can veto, but we are.  I guess he doesn't want to have to come to Boston from out in San Diego.

Manny is a lot smarter than he portrays, and he is a jerk.  I think a lot of that has to do with signing Boras as an agent.  I'm glad that Boras hasn't had that effect on the other Sox he has under his wing, at least for now.

I see this team making the playoffs.  Their starting pitching and bullpen is just good enough to squeak in.  I'm not sure if it'll be Division or Wild Card, but I don't see us not making it.  When we do Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, and Wakefield sounds pretty good to me.

One of my own thoughts that you didn't touch on, I absolutely love Jason Bay.  The guy can play the game of baseball.  He will never be Manny.  In the batter's box that will hurt our team.  In the outfield and in the clubhouse I think it is a great thing for our team.  Obviously losing Manny hurt our lineup, but I feel a lot better cheering for a team that doesn't have that selfish jerk on it.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

I'm not going but am planning on watching it on Nesn tomorrow. I'm most looking forward to seeing Stolmy Pimental pitch for Lowell in the 12:30 game.

As for a random thought- I really think that this Lugo situation is going to get ugly when he comes back. Either

1. He finds out he has lost his starting role, and sulks. Or

2. Francona sticks him back at short, and Lugo gets greeted with " You suck Lugo", "We want Lowrie", and also " You suck Lugo, we want Lowrie " chants for the rest of the season.

I'm predicting that the Sox trade Lugo, cash(money, not Kevin), and mediocre BP prospect like Hunter Jones or Richie Lentz in the offseason to Detroit.

Francona's strength as a manager has always been how he manages situations like Lugo's....Crisp's...etc.  I doubt there will be any kind of problem with Lugo either way Francona goes.  Lugo doesn't seem like the type.  If he's been given enough time to get healthy, I can't see either giving Lugo his job back or letting Lowrie keep the job as a bad move.  Lugo had 69 RBIs and did very well as a baserunner.  He's had a sub-par year defensively but he hasn't been healthy.  He's not a bad option.  Neither is Lowrie....He looks like an underrated defensive shortstop and he can definitely hit.  The way Francona is resting players, they'll be plenty of opportunity for everybody on the roster to play.

As weird as it sounds I think the Red Sox went after Giles in an attempt to block him from the 1st place Rays. They have been on the market for additional outfield help and surely would have picked Giles up.

P.S - The reason I say "block" is because The Red Sox have dibs on the waiver wire before the Rays because of their worse record.

TB was one of the teams Giles could block anyway.  I think they really wanted him, maybe wanted to block him from the Angels too.  Giles likes playing with his brother in SD and he wants to retire next year.  So be it.

Making the move to block either TB or LA is a pretty shrewd move.  If that's the case, well done.

Well, Jacoby seems to have remembered how to hit again. What's up haters? >:(

I really didn't bump this thread for the purpose of using a few good games as vindication for Theo& company making the right choice( and of course as Ya'll Hate and Ready for 17 have mentioned, we don't really know what was offered)with the Santana trade offer, but thinking longterm, waiting a year and making a run at Sabbathia seems wiser. C.C only requires money and a #1 pick. No prospects. Of course, the Yankees will probably outbid us on Sabbathia, but I'm still glad we didn't make the deal. 20+ mil a year is a lot of cash, even for the Sox. I'd rather the money goes towards resigning Papelbon,Youk, free agent X.

I really hope this team doesn't go after Sabathia.  Sure he'd be an upgrade, but this team is playing for seven or eight months, and Sabathia is a six month pitcher.

I'm really concerned about their ability to make the postseason.  Every time I check the standings and see second place and three games back I get deja vu to every single baseball day from 1999-2003.  Plus, that it's the Yankees behind them only sounds terribly foreboding to me.  Not a good summer.

I love the team, though.  Just doesn't seem like they can get it done.  Oh well.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.
