The Cincinnati Reds are awaiting word from Ken Griffey Jr. on whether he'll accept a tentative trade to the Chicago White Sox.

The Reds approached Griffey on Wednesday night in Houston and asked if he would waive his contractual rights to accept a deal to the White Sox, said a baseball source. Griffey has the right to veto any trade because he has 10 years of major league service time and five years with the Reds.

The tentative trade was first reported by FOXSports.com. It is unknown what other player or players are involved in the deal.

Griffey, 38, is hitting .245 with 15 home runs for Cincinnati this season. On June 9, he joined Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa as the sixth player in history to hit 600 homers.

While the Reds (51-58) languish in their division, the White Sox (60-46) lead the AL Central by 1½ games over the Minnesota Twins and 5½ over the Detroit Tigers.

Its a shame Griffey suffered all those injuries. If he had better health we would be watching him break Bonds home run record. But at least A-Rod is still in very good position to pass Bonds.

Makes no sense. Griffey is not an upgrade over Swisher, Quentin, or Dye. Nor at the DH spot over Thome. Is Swisher moving to first for Konerko?

Yet another case of the competition getting help and Theo just trying to do addition by subtraction.

Griffey may not be a perfect fit, but if going into the postseason, if you asked me whether I would rather have him up at an important time or Swisher, Quentin, or Dye, well that one is easy.

With all due respect, look past the name and look at the numbers. Quentin is on pace for over 40 home runs and 130 RBIs. His OPS is well over .900 while Griffey's is under .800. Griffey is a power hitter with a terrible slugging percentage for one (.432). If you'd rather have Griffey up at the plate over Quentin or Dye in the playoffs, well, consider the playoffs lost.

Also consider that Dye has a close to .600 SLG and over .900 OPS and exactly one more ring than Griffey. So yeah, I'd take all 3 over Griffey right now. He couldn't hit over .250 hitting in the National League.

We're not talking about Griffey in his prime. When was the last time he had an important at-bat anyway? The last time Griffey made the playoffs (due to being on a bad team, but it wasn't helped by the injuries) was in 1997.

Last time Theo did some addition by subtraction we won the World Series, so have some faith in the Sox front office.
