Trading Manny is at a all-time high & should be a top agenda for the Red Sox management since he has made it clear that he basically wants out. I think The Red Sox will lose nothing on offense since Pudge is always batting near 300 & Gary Sheffield is just coming of an injury but seems to be healthy now and is batting for Power again. Plus the Red Sox attain Matt Joyce who is a Rookie that has been lighting up pitching in the minors & majors all year with over 25 Hr's combined & has been AL player of the week already once this year. This move also gives the Sox defense & a catcher they so desperately needs. Any thoughts?

If we trade for a catcher, it should be a young one.  I think the team would fold if you took Varitek out of the starting lineup right now.

Hobbs you do think Pudge is a major upgrade from Varitek though right? And Sheff will be Sheff very soon here since he is now healthy again. Plus both of these players are Post-Season clutch as well & proven winners that can thrive in big moments. Trading Manny is a bad idea 99% of the time when he is happy. But the facts are the facts & eventually you have to get something for him before he walks. Plus Sheff & Pudge are in the last year of their respective deals & Boston doesn't have to sign them back if they don't perform up to their liking! So the trade is absolutely not atrocious. Teams hate dealing proven talent or stars for disgruntled older set in their way players who play bad defense & are headaches to management. He has depreciated & you are not going to get a Vlad, A-Rod, Magglio, Ichiro, Hamilton, Carlos Quentin, Cabrera, etc. The best you can hope for are other aging stars or a fringe all-star like Jermaine Dye who people are suprised every year how good he is doing. We have to be realistic although we love our guys. You cant trade K.G. for Dwight Howard at this point even though he is clearly the better player to put things in perspective in a Manny deal!

Pudge is a better hitter.  I'd prefer Varitek for his leadership and game-calling, though.

I think Manny is in a different class of player than the ones listed here, and if this is the best we can do, I'd rather keep Manny, unhappy or not.  In fact, I'd pick up Manny's contract for next year, because we're not going to be able to replace his production.

With all due respect, and I'm trying to be nice here, this might just be the most ill-conceived, unlikely trade proposals ever brought up on Celticsblog.

If the Sox can get the equivalent in prospects that they would receive simply by keeping him, letting the contract expire, and getting the Class A free agent draft picks when he signs elsewhere, they would be lucky.

If they trade him without sucking up large amounts of the money owed on the current contract they would be lucky.

Sorry, but the Red Sox are not dealing from a position of strength here. Other teams know that and since the market for teams that would want or need Manny is small, the Red Sox can expect not to get anything close to equal value for him.

I say keep him and let him finish with his 30-35 HR's, 100-115 RBI's, .300 average, .980 OBS and another World Series MVP award and let's call it even.

If Manny is a -1 in the locker room, then Sheffield is a -1243. There aren't many people I dislike, however, Gary Sheffield is one of them. I don't want him to be a part of any team I root for.
