Just to have a bit of fun and keep ourselves entertained with what should be a boring remaining offseason (free-agent signing wise), I thought this would be a good idea.  The idea is to chronicle anything about Glen Davis as it relates to his weight during this offseason. To be on the lookout for new pictures, quotes, testimonials, workout descriptions, etc. so that we can somehow track his progress through the summer.

At the moment I only have a handful of pictures this month that show his progress... I'm looking for more quotes to add, but just to kick off the thread, I think it will do.

Quote
"I'm gonna live at the gym," Davis told reporters on Wednesday. "I ain't going anywhere. I'll be up here probably eight weeks. We don't start until September 30 so I want to be at a point eight weeks from now and then cruise to September 30."

The goal for Davis, in his own words? "Just maintain my conditioning, maintain my body, be fit and ready to play."

Well if you find some quotes, articles, photos, anything... please post them. I think there was a recent comment of Danny on Davis recently, but can't find it.  Anyways, have fun with it.

Sounds good.  I'll sticky this, and see how many more updates we can get.

No one can look at this picture and say that BBD doesn't have a LOT of work to do.

I like his attitude though. It is obviously pretty clear he knows what is standing between him and success in this league. His Belly!

Let's hope he comes back like Big AL and Perk did from the offseason. If so he can be a very big player off the bench for us. I sure hope so, because it is impossible to not like the guy. Great personality.

BBD is definitely heavy for a basketball player, but as compared to the average American, he's not in all that bad shape.  You can actually see some muscle tone:

I wasn't trying to insinuate I think he needed to drop weight to be a chef. I'm not as fat as BBD is, but I'd have a huge amount of work to do in order to be able to be in "basketball shape". What does it matter that he isn't much fatter than the average guy?!

BBD's body fat percentage is apparently around 11% - 12%.  That's not bad, even for a basketball player.  He's a big guy, and he's got some fat, but looking at him without his shirt on, he's got some muscle tone, as well.

As a baseline, here's where he was about a month prior to the draft:

Quote
Since the end of a disappointing junior season two months ago, Glen Davis has lost 65 pounds and now tips the scales at 282, said his strength and conditioning coach, James Cooper.

...

Working with Cooper and former LSU basketball player Fess Irvin in Houston, he has transformed himself with diet and workouts that go from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Cooper, a strength and training professional for 15 years, put Glen Davis on a managed diet featuring several small meals per day. It starts with oatmeal in the morning and includes tofu, small amounts of chicken or salmon, no more than three pieces of fruit per day and two handfuls of vegetables at lunch. For a snack, he gets soy nuts.

When he isn't eating, Glen Davis is doing conditioning, speed or agility work or lifting weights. Now that Glen Davis has hit his target weight, he's working to maintain it.

"He was pretty pooped by the end of the day," said Cooper, who runs Fit Athletic Club and has worked with the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. "Now we can back off a little bit.

"It's been a project, but as long as he's willing to do it. ... Of course he complains, but he works harder than some of the pros I've had."

Cooper said Glen Davis' body fat has dropped 9 percent in the past two months, and he can run 5 miles without stopping.

It would be interesting to see where he is in relation to that 282 pounds today.

Where are we getting this 11-12% figure?! With that fat roll hanging over his pants even with his arms in the air I highly doubt that.  Posey was listed as 12% when he got suspended from the Heat.

As far as muscle tone, I can show you a TON of really fat people that have some pretty nice definition in their arms, legs, and shoulders, but also have a really fat gut.  Go back and look at pictures of William "the fridge" Perry when he was younger and he has absolutely RIPPED arms and shoulders but about 75 extra pounds on his stomach.

The problem with this argument though is that as a lineman in the NFL that weight helps. As a basketball player unnecessary fat on the gut only slows him down and hurts his vertical. You don't get any benefit from that belly roll he has. It doesn't help him be stronger. No matter the amount that he needs to lose, he really needs to lose that fat to take a step forward. Otherwise he will be watching Powe out there while his big butt rides the pine.

Even BBD realizes he needs to do a lot of work, otherwise he wouldn't have made those comments.

There is no question that he was in decent shape when he entered training camp. All this work listed above helped him. The thing that concerns me is that he had to force himself into this diet and workout program in order to get to where he was. He obviously doesn't have the self-discipline to do it himself. That doesn't speak too well for his ability to keep his weight in check for his career. I am sure that some coach or Ainge told him the reason he lost most of his minutes was his conditioning and weight, so he publicly said the right things. We'll see if 1) he can follow through and 2) if he keeps it off for good.

Will any of us ever figure out what Big Baby is doing. He's a fun loving guy who's filled with personality.  As to his basketball, I think he has the desire to fulfill his potential and he's fortunate to be on the right team to get the support he needs.

Great idea for a topic. Had same thought, every time I saw a picture of him.
Let's hope he can do it. We need him to contribute this coming season.
