Yes, I dangled my participle but oh well.  But on to the question, what skill are we looking for to replace Posey?  I think the biggest thing he brought was defense, hustle, three-point shooting, and the ever so important, annoyance factor.  I'm not sure we can find all of these skills in one other player so I'm wondering what we consider to be most important.

For my money, I don't think we should overlook Posey's ability to shoot the three.  It was vitally important for stretching the defense and allowing others to do there thing.  This is one reason why I do not think that TA can fill Posey's role.  I think Posey's defense is overrated but I suppose that would be next.  Thoughts?

I think giddens can fill posey's spot. i know he is a rookie but he can shoot, rebound and seems to play decent D. I'd rather not spend any money on posey's replacement since there aren't anyone like posey available.. i'd rather develop our young guys and fill other needs.

I don't think it's a given that the team replaces in terms of signing a similar player. They could revamp the whole bench and give it a different look. I don't think they're pinned down to anything because frankly there's very little on the bench right now.

No House, No Tony, No Posey, No PJ.

Lot of room to redevelop the bench and give it a different look.

The team needs

1) a 2nd PG.   {Arroyo, Lue, House,...}
2) a 2nd C.  {Elson, Thomas, Skinner...}
3) Defensive swingman {Ross, TA...}
4) Shooter at the 3/4 {Nachbar, Barnes...}

I think its possible to combine needs 3 and 4 into one person. I just don't know who yet...If I'm Danny Ainge I get an offer sheet out to Azbuike as fast as the pony express will carry it.

He is restricted.

But at this point, I think you can get both 3 and 4 with min offers.

The combo player will not be quite good enough in either categories.  (from who is left)

Forget skill set... Quinton Ross!!  He has some playoff experience with the Clippers and is a stellar defender.  He's only 27 years old which is the beginning of a basketball player's prime.  He is unrestricted and we could possibly get for a deal similar to the one we gave to Posey last off season.  3M with a player option for 3M.  Hope that Giddens can take some of the load this season too.  Ross shot 9 for 21 for 3's last year which is a good percentage while not much volume.  Ross is not as good as Posey, but is he worth 50% of what Posey will be getting paid this year?  I believe so.

That is to much to give Ross.

I'd like to see Matt Barnes, a PG/SG or SG/PG type (I'm fine with TA), and a back-up Center.

Else, I'd like to see a SG/SF defender type, with a solid back-up PG, and a back-up Center.

Those two are my favorite scenarios for the time being. Don't have specific players in mind at the moment, but I hope that's what we're looking for.

You know, Giddens might do a half decent job replacing Posey.  By no means am I happy about Posey going, I've been arguing fervently with many of you about keeping him at all costs.

However, most scouting reports talk about his freakish athleticism, his ability to hit the three, has really long arms, and the enthusiasm he exudes when he plays.  Sounds a little like Posey.  Moreover, we're not asking him to come in carry the load.  All he'd have to do would be come in, play tough defense, hit weakside open threes, and dive for loose balls.

Of course he won't get away with what Posey gets away with defensively because he's a rookie and I don't expect him to have all the intangibles, but compared to what is available on the free agent market, he might not be much worse than what is on the free agent market.

defense and 3 point shooting... as well as some vet/league experience. posey knows a lot of tricks to guard certain good players and completely get under their skin.

I'm in complete agreement with you.  When your PG is not a proficient 3-point shooter, you need others besides RA and PP to be able to hit from long range.  Someone who will play lots of minutes, like the 6th man should be able to hit a 3 with consistency.  So, who is available, and obtainable, who can do that?
