The chickens arrived today.  3 of them.  One with a particularly peabrained look on its face.  My wife kept trying to convince that I liked them, but I'm still not sold.  On the bright side our black lab did not even notice them there (of course her brain is just slightly larger than other chicky's).  All I know is my lawn mower is now sitting in the middle of the yard, and the whereabouts of the rest of my lawn stuff is a bit of a mystery.  My manly space has been fallen victim to Fowl Play (sorry...) and my tools have been evicted.

Whoa is me.

Stupid chickens...

OK...We've had the chickens for a few months.  They've been producing yummy fresh eggs daily.  I've even taken some amusement in watching them eat just about whatever you throw their way.

Yesterday we even took one of them to my daughter's pre-school to show for "farm animal" week.  A proud chicken owner moment to say the least.

So last night my wife goes to close them up for the evening and what does she find?

RATS!

We're getting traps and guess who gets to clean up the dead ones?

Yecchhh...Filthy vermin.

So now I'm back on my original STUPID CHICKENS battle cry.

I couldn't even enjoy the eggs this morning.  I kept thinking I was eating part rat (not that that makes any sense, but the association was there)
Yup

I live in the city. The closet thing we see to live chickens here in Everett are really fat pigeons and the occasionally lost sewer rat.

Now, now, where is that overall positive attitude you've always displayed.

A truly positive person would attack this situation by trying to make chicken salad out of chicken...you get the idea... ;)

On the totally serious tip, my man, congratulations on all this.  They're some degree of work as all animals are, but I for one am honestly jealous that you have taken your food into your own hands, and I'm sure the eggs taste much much better and are much much better for you than those in a store.

The food we eat really does goes through some grotesque stuff in order to be produced for supermarkets, and I think what you're doing is akin to having a garden and growing your own produce.  Big ups, this city slicker takes his Fiftynine 50 off to you for living the dream!  :P

Thanks.  I'm all for the idea of "taking our food into our own hands", but really this was my wife's thing.  I was opposed to it mainly on the level that we have a hard enough keeping up with all the stuff we have to do already.  Now on top of this we have introduced vermin to our space.

We'll figure it out.

ps - i tried a garden a couple of years back.  I tilled and fertalized and planted and watered and the WEEDs absloutely loved it! We'll give it a go again when the kids are a little bigger.  I think they'll actually be into it.

We do have a bunch of raspberry bushes that we have a pretty good grip on and they are really productive and delicious.  They're actually still popping up with their 2nd batch of the season.
Yup
