I never quite reached the stage of absolutely putting my foot down completely against this idea, and my mild protests were merely met with wry smiles from my wife.  Yesterday co-workers of my wife showed up, and built the long talked about coop, and the chix are on the way.  With them come the promises of a "positive experience for my girls", fresh eggs, and, well, I think that was all my wife had to offer on the positive side.

On the con side, I see more work, stinkiness, noise, and the prospect of sometime down the road having a dead chicken that I can't eat.

Can anyone else give me a glint of positivity about becoming the not-so proud owner some chickens?

BTW - they're Rhode Island Redz (so at least they have that going for them)

Yup

Hopefully, the chicken coop isn't within earshot of your house.

Be warned:  if you have a rooster, it *will* crow at the crack of dawn.  Repeatedly.  And loudly.  And at times, during the middle of the night, as well.

At least you have a backup if there is no food in the house for dinner.

Nope no roosters.  The coop is set behind a barn which is a decent distance from the house and should offer some noise buffering.

Yes, in my travels in the third world (where chickens are often wandering in and out of the mud huts in which people live), I have often wanted to kill every rooster in the villages I've stayed in as they try to summon the sun at 2, 3, or 4 in the morning.

Worse comes to worse, you can have everyone over for a barbecue.

I grew up next to a farm. It was great to be able to get fresh eggs. The biggest downside is the clean up and smell. Nothing like fresh chicken droppings on a hazy hot and humid day.

also, It's not like you can send them to a kennel when you go on vacation.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that one.  CDs, LPs, DVDs, Sports Cards and farm fresh eggs (of course we're only getting 3 chickens, which will only produce one egg each a day, so it might be tough to build my tycoon ----I'm trying really hard to resist using a "not putting all of my eggs in one basket" joke here, but it's taking all of my will power to resist the lure of this one :-X :-X :-X :-X

let me tell you--i run a farm feed store in maine and sell chicks--i sell close to 1000 birds each spring and i would never buy one myself.  having said that, the rhode island reds are good layers and often make good pets.  good luck to you because chickens can be a chore when they reach adulthood but they do eat the ticks in the yard.

My wife has a couple of friends who have the R.I. Reds and they seem to be pretty even tempered as far as chickens go.  Maybe I'll learn to love them, but I just don't get it.

I'm also a little bitter about my lawn storage area being taken over. >:(

Being a former chicken farmer, I give you 2 thumbs up on your self getting chickens. I also had RIR's. There great chickens, nice fresh brown eggs every morning....well once their about 8-10 weeks old.

They'll be mature when we get them.  I think in a week or two
