Agreed with Mr. October.  I don't like this move if it's for anything more than the minimum.  Limiting our future options for a stiff (remember, he got dominated by Brian Butch in workouts, apparently) just doesn't do it for me.

Actually, no...  the more I think about this move, I don't like it, regardless of the contract.  There were better options out there to help us win now.

I don't believe he's going to be the main backup to Perkins. It's probably a high risk high reward gamble. But the risk is extremely high. I think this may mean that PJ is going to be back in March. I like that.

But if Danny had to use the LLE or part of the MLE, I'll be ...um..... upset. We need to use that $$ on players that are a lock to crack the rotation.

Agreed.

As long as it doesn't cut into our MLE, even the LLE would be fine with me. He's young, he's big and I believe he is an ok athlete, why not take a flier on him, this early in free agency. They could still bring in a Vet for him to battle for minutes (which is what I would advise).

Hmm... with a name like Patrick O'Bryant did anyone else picture him to be a white Irish guy?  :)

Are you kidding me?

Are you freakin' kidding me?

What the heck? Aghhhhhhhh! Why?

What a waste of a roster spot. Bring Pollard's injured behind back to sit on the bench, at least he'll bring something worthwhile to the team.

You're not waiting for "Planet Patrick"?

As long as this was the "Pollard replacement" and not the PJ BROWN replacement" I can deal with it.

Not one person on here has any idea of what this kid plays like. Stop pretending! He was obviously talented enough to be a lottery pick 2 years ago. That out of a small school like Bradley! He played in a system that is not real Center friendly.

He has a 7'6" wingspan. Has shown a history of soft hands and decent feet. He has added ten lbs of bulk since he came out of school. He doesn't have one big negative other than his thinner frame coming out into the draft. He blocks shots, has decent touch with the ball.

These are all the traits listed in multiple scouting/draft reports. The guy is 22 years old. For what we are investing in him, and his upside, this is actually a very good signing.

One other thought guys. How could we go wrong. The Celtics signing a guy named O'BRYANT... The luck of the irish has to be with us on this one...

The one thing we shouldn't do is judge him by his Golden State production.  Perk would have looked like crap playing in that system.  Getting a young, legitimate 7 footer and having Perk, KG and CRay whip him into shape doesn't sound like a bad idea to me.

Another Scal type signing? Especially if the LLE or MLE was used.

Wow, Danny finally has some options in free agency and he chooses O'Bryant? :o

I hope the kid works out. I'll trust Danny on this one, I guess.

What happened to Birdman?

He's big and cheap.  I'm sure he signed for the minimum.  Why not? Let Clifford Ray and Bryan Doo earn their keep. I'd just as soon have this guy as the useless Pollard.

Has anyone watched this kid play?  Should we be upset over this signing?  I'm willing to wait and see how he does.
We should be upset. He's not an NBA level player. He's incapable at playing at this level.

I'd be surprised if he plays 100 minutes with Celtics next season. He'll be inactive on the bench for the overwhelming majority of the season

Wonder if his contract is guaranteed? Maybe we can cut him in camp. Ah, probably not, too early in free agency for those types of contracts. O Bryant probably got his money.

Yep that's the bright side of it alright. At least he's not here to replace PJ. He's here to replace an empty shirt that plays no role in the Celtics quest for another title.

Oh, come on.  We could fill the pages of a 20 page thread with the names of players who were selected in the lottery who were absolutely terrible.

This kid doesn't help us win now.  He's performed terribly thus far in his career, and is out of shape.  I mean, allow me to reiterate:  he got dominated by Brian Butch.  Who?  Exactly.

I don't understand this move, but I would have preferred somebody who could actually help the team this year.

Yeah.  If we could have had Andersen for a similar contract (assuming we don't in fact sign him, as well) I'll be upset.

There had better be another big man on the horizon.

Many overreactions. If Danny and Doc feel that he will work in our system, then I'm for it.

At least he can catch and dunk an alley opp or a follow! I love Perk, but he can't.

Let's wait to hear what the terms are of his contract. The sky isn't falling.

For some reason, I don't have a bad feeling about this signing. =)

It was quite unexpected, and I remember reading that post about how he "seemed fatigued after just 15 minutes."

He has the size, so he's probably an option that DA felt was better than signing some undersized dude that we know of.
