We can all agree that signing James Posey was the first big task for the Celtics in this offseason.

Well if Bill Ingram is correct with his reporting, then we have conquered that first task.  The next question is...what's next?

Do they continue to sign players from last year? or look to bring in new pieces?  It seems to me that Posey was the only man the frontoffice NEEDED to sign back.  Since we've done that, its time to turn to once again...a backup center and more guard help.

P.J. Brown is retiring and Pollard more than likely won't be coming back so we need someone with size for that center spot.  Leon and Big Baby are great pieces and give size...at the powerfoward spot, not center.  And for backcourt help, we still don't know exactly what's happening with Sam Cassell.  Eddie House could come back, but I know Danny and Doc want to start working Gabe Pruitt into that rotation.  Also, the drafting of J.R. Giddens probably means goodbye Tony Allen.

We need a backup vet center first, then a backup vet pg.

I'd like to see House come back.  I'd only like Pollard as a third option insurance center if at all somebody would need to go in between him and Perk in the rotation.   I think the Big man question gets answered next.  Followed by the PG or combo guard depending on if House returns.  The articles I've read make TA not seem like a priority at all, he only comes back under a very specific set of circumstances the way it appears.

  • Let them hate, as long as they fear
Then we go and sign Mark Blount and Toine, and we will be all set. ::)
And someday in the midst of time,
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine

I think House is the next step. He played really well this year, and I think his inability to play the PG spot is VASTLY overstated. Other than 1 or 2 games, he had no problem bringing the ball up and initiating our offense. The guy has ice water in his veins, we might not NEED him back, but we could sure do worse.

Then, I think we bring in a few vet minimum guys to fill out the roster (Birdman, Zo, Finley, etc). Also, while I don't think its necessary at this point, I would look to see if trading some end of bench guys (BigBaby, Scal, Pruitt) could net us a pick, or maybe an unhappy vet in a losing environment.

The word is that the powers that be want to see Pruitt involved next year. From what I've seen of Pruitt (very little), he's a slightly better handling version of Eddie House. So if that is true, I wonder if the C's seek out a more defensive PG to play backup, or split the time with Pruitt until somebody earns the backup spot.

Oh and personally I'd be very curious to see Birdman around. Though I don't know if that is more curiosity over what skills he can bring or curious like when I drive by a car wreck... :P

Sign Eddie House. The very next day..or same day even. That gives us our core back. Then we find a Center and give TA the minimum if he'll take it.

I say go after Bonzi with the LLE.  Some other teams want to pay TA and he might be better somewhere else without the pressure to perform on a championship team.

The next step is to get a 5. I wonder what kind of $$$ is left? LLE?

Go get Zo, Andersen, Elson, etc.

Then try to get House back at 120% bump. Maybe target Arroyo or Johnson, if House is slipping away.

Then see what kind of gem you can grab for the minimum on the wing. Evans? Ross? etc. Maybe Tony.

If Kwame would accept a vet minimum contract, I'd take him. He is not a good starter - stone hands. But he'd be valuable as a backup - excellent post defender, excellent body.

Here is what I do if I am Ainge

0. Pat self on back
1. Sign a vet backup center for the minimum or LLE -- not sure who is available who would take it (ideally Elson, but he could probably get more somewhere else; maybe Foyle? he is poor offensively, but he brings a vet presence and maturity; would Skinner take the LLE?  he is more of a PF, but brings toughness)
2. Sign a "higher risk" player for the min.  I am thinking of players like D. Miles, S. Livingston, Anderson.  If any of these guys will take the min, it is a low priced gamble for someone with upside.
3. Keep the lines open for a vet PG.  I would be fine with House, I really like him, but there are a number of players that could fill a House-like role, especially if Pruitt is expected to get more PT.
Celtics fan for life.
