Idea: Delonte West coming back to Boston

He is a Free Agent.

He is a great compliment to rondo because he can shoot the outside shot and is 6-4 plays good D and can guard bigger guards.

we have pruit who I think will be good but you can't rely on a young kid that hasn't played enough minutes. I think we all agree on that.

 But when there is an option of bringing Delonte off the bench,IF he wants and can take a back up role, to come back to the C's.

that would be a perfect situation.

he would cost around 3 mil/yr.

All in all I think Keyon Dooling would be the best fit along with Brent Barry, But if those players aren't available and Delonte is willing to accept a backup role on a championship team( which I envisioned him as a backup on a really good team)

please give me your thoughts about the possibility of Delonte coming back

That would be great.  He could play the 1 and 2 and split time with Pruitt as backup combo guards.  However if we pay him 3 mil that would leave us with nothing left to sign Posey.  If Posey signs elsewhere that this is a definite possibility.  I also don't see Cleveland letting him walk for only 3 mil.

hes not a FA, he's a restricted FA. no way do the cavs let him walk, he'll be gotten for realtivly cheap money, and from all reports, he's one of the guys on the team that lebron really wants to keep.

I'm sure he would like to get paid. If he signs an offer sheet, he gets paid, regardless of whether CLE matches or not.

Delonte is going to be looking to get paid this year. Cleveland pretty much has to sign him. Don't think he'd want to resort to a backup PG roll after being the starter on a solid playoff team. We going to have to look at some older vets that want a ring. Does D Armstrong got any gas left in his tank?

I would love to see Delonte come back here. I like his game, he can shoot almost as well as House, he can handle the ball much better, and he plays better defense. Problem is, we won't be able to offer him anything substantial if Posey resigns. Under that scenario, we could only offer an LLE deal starting at 1.9 million. He won't take a long term deal at that rate, and Cleveland would most definitely match that anyway (I think his qualifying offer, which I'm sure they extended, is a million higher than that anyway). Plus, I agree, he's probably as well off in Cleveland as he would be here, at least in the short run.

But in the long run, why would he want to stay in Cleveland? There is no way you can count on Lebron returning to the Cavs after 09-10. The Nets will have room for a max contract, and the Knicks will do everything they can to do the same. He's going to leave. And at that point - the Cavs will be a mess. They'll have money (their only current salary for 2010-11 is Lebron's player option), but nobody to spend it on. Who's gonna want to come to Cleveland after Lebron leaves?

I don't think we can or will get Delonte this season because of financial constraints. My personal hope would be that he goes back to Cleveland on a one year contract at the qualifying offer rate, and next year, we can persuade him to come to Boston with a deal using the MLE. At that point, Cleveland won't be able to match, we'll have the MLE available, the "Lebron is leaving" rumors will be even more powerful, to the point I wouldn't be surprised if the Cavs traded him during that season to try to get something of value when he leaves. So, Delonte might be willing and ready to move on and try to take a shot at a title here. I think he liked it here, and I hope we'd be happy to have him back, I think he's great. But I think it's a year before we can realistically talk about taking a shot at him.

Delonte would be awesome, but i really doubt our ability to get him.  He always makes positive contributions as we saw him, James, and Z as the only real bright spots when we faced the cavs.  He would fit right into 'UBUNTU' without a hitch at all.

Cleveland by no means is gonna let him go though, but if we dont get BGJ back (which i pray we do), then making him an offer will either land us a solid 1/2 backup with experience or make Cleveland weaker b/c they will have to spend even more money to keep him.  Win/Win for us.

Not to mention making one of our toughest opponents much weaker without one of their most consistent players.  I'd feel much better facing Cleveland without Delonte on their roster.  Let them play with the tyron lue's of the world starting at the point.

And as far as Delonte not wanting to play here?  Please...  Every player in the league watched this team this year and at least entertained the thought of playing with them.  I'm pretty sure i saw even Kobe daydreaming while we were thumping them in game 6.  Delonte liked when he was here before and we were terrible, and i'm sure he wouldnt shun the chance to return with the big 3.

That's a good point.  There has been a lot of talk about players knowing that Lebron is planning to bolt.  Why would a young player want to resign long term there?


I think there is a good chance we see West play for the one year qualifying offer this year.

It would be great to have DW back here.  He is scrappy and can shoot the three  -- the problem is that Cleveland will match (as others have said above).  One also has to wonder if Ainge sees something of Delonte in Pruitt.  Pruitt played pretty poorly for the Cs this year, during his breaks from stints in the D-League, but he is young and there is time.
