Josh Childress as an Option or Will the Hawks Match?

The Hawks have a tough call with this kid because Josh Smith is likely to get serious money from someone, which they will have to match, and Atlanta's owners are in disarray. They might balk at signing him, as good as he is. We might have better leverage if we wait until Smith gets a killer offer first.

He's an intriguing player. Despite having an ugly shot, he gave the Hawks 12 pts a game off the bench with a 57% shooting percentage, which is incredible. He rebounds, plays D, and seems to have a high basketball IQ. Like Rondo, he always seems to get to loose balls before everyone else.

The problem is that signing him puts the C's in limbo until the 10 day period goes by, and you might not get him.

You forget the Hawks ownership is still suing each other and very much in limbo.  That has prevented them from making moves in previous offseasons of great substance.  Why should that change now?  That is why their move on a Josh Smith offer sheet becomes so intriguing.

If it could be worked out, I would like such a signing. As others have said, good rebounding and D, intelligent and some offense. Not bad for a guy who's what 26?

and of course if it could be worked out it would be awesome, but under the current CBA, the chances of it happining are 0%

To answer one poster, Childress is an RFA, so it is perfectly legal to make him an offer sheet.  His original team has the choice of matching the offer or letting him go.

Well I just took a look at Childress' data and he is an interesting prospect.  Only 25/26 years old and he has decent production coming off the bench.  More importantly he is a long/tall player at 6-8 that can play the G/F position.  He could pose a tough matchup problem for the position as a defensive player with that kind of height.

It doesn't hurt at all to make an offer, the worst that can happen is it gets matched.  But I think the Celtics will want to take a shot at Posey before they think of making an offer on Childress.  I haven't heard any rumors of teams actively pursuing Childress, so this backup plan can afford to wait.

The probelm with tendering an offer sheet is that it takes you off the market for 7 days, since the RFA's team has that long to decide whether or not it will match.

it will have too, since as others have stated, it effectivly takes us out of the market. theres about 5-7 guys id liek with the MLE before we allow ourselves to be held hostage by the hawks, who, if they have any sense, will, as WDL said, wait until day 6/7 to match.

I don't think this is a problem. Atlanta will match so quickly that they won't even have time to laugh, as one other poster suggested.

No they won't.  They will wait as long as they can, because they have no reason to rush, and by waiting, they can take another team off the market.

I dont get it. Why all the love for Josh Childress? He's a decent spot up shooter with a fugly stroke. ATL is dumb enough to match any offer any give him, but he won't get one from Boston. I'd resign Tony Allen before I'd offer anything to Childress...

Childress made a lot of big plays in the Celtics series. I was impressed.  He was a pain in the neck.

If the Hawks are forced to throw max money at Josn Smith, there's a good possibility that they won't want to spend $5m+ on a backup player. They will need to sign Marvin Williams next season also. How much money is this low attendance team willing to tie up in swingmen? 

Because of their financial situation, they might not be able to afford the luxury of a full MLE backup.  The Cs could do a S & T with Scal (with $3m to pay him for one of his two remaining years), BBD, and TA, who would sign a $1.5m contract.  That deal actually helps both teams, giving the Hawks a needed widebody with upside in Davis, and a cheaper swingman off the bench.  It would give the Cs some luxtax savings with Scal off the books, and clear some roster space for cheapie vet FAs.
