Would you guys ever consider signing Ryan Gomes as fallback plan if we don't get Posey?   He is not nearly the defensive player Posey is (however as some have pointed out Posey's defense wasn't always stellar in the playoffs such as games 3 through 7 in the Cleveland series) however he is a solid player who can play the 3 and 4.   On Minnesota he might be squeezed out of the rotation a little.   The Wolves have Brewer, Miller, and now it looks like Carney in the Philly trade at the SF spot (some of these guys may play a little at the 2 but I see McCants getting much of the playing time there.   At the PF you have Love, Smith, Richard, and Big Al might get some time there.  Someone is going to lose playing time and Gomes is a restricted free agent.   Maybe we can offer something like a 2 year 6 mil deal as part of the MLE and the Wolves don't match (You never know with McHale).  I'm sure Ainge is going down all avenues if he doesn't lock up Posey to a contact to his liking and wonder if he's thought about this or if any of you think it would be a smart choice?

considering whats left id certainly consider it even if i dont think danny will. hes a smart player if not a good defender he wouldnt cost much and he plays the game right. that said if hes restricted i cant see us offering enough where they wouldnt match to keep him.

I think having to wait a week while the Twolves decide to match or not would be a bigger hurdle than the money

the C's can't afford to let time pass while FA's sign elsewhere

A tweener forward who doesn't play defense and doesn't add enough offense to make up for it ..... hopefully not.

I don't hate Gomes, but I've always felt that he was radically overrated on this board (much like Delonte West).  But that's not even the biggest reason why I don't want him.

Simply put, he doesn't fit what the Celtics need.  He's not quick enough to be an effective defender against swingmen, which basically means he's another undersized 4 to go along with Powe and BBD.  Furthermore, he doesn't have the range to play the 3 in this system.  Remember, one of the reasons Posey worked so well here was because he was a good weak side 3-pt shooter.  If you put Gomes on the floor with Rondo and Perkins, opposing defenses are going to have a field day cheating off all three of them to guard whatever members of the Big Three are on the floor with them.

I don't think adding another undersized PF/have decent "power 3" is the answer. I think they have to get longer.  I personally love Gomes' game but he constantly gets swallowed by Bigger PFs and outquicked by fast SFs. No thank you.

  • I Love NUMBA 17 !
I was never really feeling Gomes.
I don't think he would be much of a contribution to the Celtics now.

Gomes is a polished offensive player and rebounder but a bad defender. He's not what the Celtics need.

Come on Jon... LJ and Delonte almost killed us in playoffs and you say West is overrated... ;-)

The guy is a liability on defense at the 3 or the 4. So no thank you.

I like Ryan as well, but I don't see him as a great fit for this team. The only way he's worth signing is if he's playing regular minutes, otherwise he just becomes a Scal - over paid for the minutes played. The only way he could play regular minutes would be if we had a singel C/PF off the bench who was excellent defensively, plus a single wing/PG that was essentially backing up both guard spots.

For example imagine you had a Perk clonne at PF/C off the bench and a big combo guard type. Then you'd need a combo forward was better on offense. As is we have two better options at PF in BBD and Powe and are more likely to have a backup guard (in House/Pruitt.) That means we'd need a wing off the bench who can compliment Pierce and Allen.

I'm a huge Gomes fan, but he has historically been horrible off the bench, and isn't a great defender, which wouldn't bode well for him in the 'Posey" role.
