Celtics seem to be weighing Giddens/Walker options and casting a pretty wide net. Basden seems like a reliable defensive specialist; but seems that Ainge is keeping options open - hope we don't loose too many core players as a result. Seems to be hoping for the best and planning for the worst.

Eddie Basden
6'5" Defensive Specialist, good rebounder, not explosive scorer, but good percentages

i think basden is going to be among the guys they consider as a fallback option for posey and maggette. i think kirk snyder also gets a look and its quite possible they go with one of them because i dont think they get maggette and i dont think theyre gonna spend enough to keep posey either.

Would rather see someone with some potential upside than Snyder who seems to have been so-so most of his career. Basben has distinguished himself, albeit at a lower level; but has played reliably on a winning team in Europe and seems ready to take his game to the NBA level. Good role player. Perhaps not the upside of Giddens; but less maintenance.

I think people are being too tough on Giddens for following his agent's advice to not jump at the first offer the Celtics presented him.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
everything i read about snyder shows that he leaves a negative trail behind...really don't care much for the guy as he's never wanted back from the places he leaves (sloan couldn't stand the kid - and i trust sloan's judgment).

Wait, the celtics made an offer???  I thought the problem was that they didn't make him an offer yet.

I agree though, that we can't blame Giddens, because this is clearly coming from his agent.

Danny said they are in "negotiations" with Giddens' agent.  His agent said that they couldn't quickly agree to terms, because the Celtics have some luxury tax concerns that other teams don't.  What I took that to mean was that the Celtics aren't willing to give Giddens the full 120% of the rookie scale that most players expect.

Would have hoped for some humility from Giddens. I really feel for Walker. He is putting a good face on things and saying all the right things; but I hope his passport is up to date. Too bad seems like a good kid and a legit talent.

I didn't know that was an option, I thought it was a set pay scale for first round picks.

I had assumed the whole contract thing had more to do with the C's dragging their feet to see how other things ended up before committing money to Giddens.

There's the scale, and they can be signed up to 120% of the figure, or as low as 80% of the figure. Then they have to negotiate amount of years, team options, etc.

Find me a rookie first rounder showing some humility in regards to contract negotiations.

Well, Basden is a defensive specialist and provides incredible hustle, but I think we can do better. And he hasn't exactly distinguished himself, he's another journeyman in Europe among many: he was an okay 6th man for Fenerbahce (but not good enough for them to keep him), he played a couple of games for a french club, then he was waived and ended the season in the German League, that nobody really follows.

And that first link is for the Turkish league website, not the Euroleague:

No to Basden. He's not good enough and there's better players available.
