Scal expiring next year could be a valuable asset, and suddenly Danny would look like a genius.

Danny will never look like a genius in regards to the scal contract,he really overpaid for a bench warmer.
scal's contract begins to look really bad when he wears a suit to a game because he's unable to crack the active 12 man lineup...you simply can't pay a guy 3 mil. a year that deep down the depth chart.  sorry, but nobody can spin that one...

Of course, but wait till next season (or maybe this year) when Danny somehow manages to trade him for something meaningful, and we'll start seeing an abundance of threads calling Danny a genius for specifically signing him to a 5-year deal knowing that his 5th year would coincide with the eve of one of the most important free-agency class in a while.

Anyways, other than taking a roster spot of someone who could be more useful, if useful at all, his contract isn't affecting much on who we target as free-agents and our willingness to spend on our current ones.

Also, his usefulness will depend on the signing of Posey. Because let's say we get Maggette, I can see somehow Scal cracking the 12 man roster. If Posey is the one signed, Scal has little chance of making it.

There is no amount of wishful thinking or hyperbole that should allow any member to believe that Danny knew he needed an expiring contract in 2010, so he offered scalabrine a contract that escalated to three and a half million dollars before ending in the summer of 2010. If Wyc believed that he should fire danny for wasting his money

Agreed.  Saying Danny is a genious for signing scal just to have an expiring contract 5 years down the road to sign other players is a terrible stretch and probably the biggest positive spinning i've heard.

Thats like saying someone is a genious for buying a car that doesnt run for 15 million dollars,  making payments for 5 years, but happens to sell the parts 5 years later for 10 dollars and buys a really good cheeseburger.  Not sound logic.

Spending over 3 million dollars on something worth much much less is never a smart thing, much less the cap space taken up for those 5 years.  Danny took a gamble on scal, after him coming off a decent year.  He had hoped he was even better than he had shown.  He was wrong.  It happens.  I wouldnt want his job, its much easier where i am now.

That said, after making payments on the lemon known as scal for 3 years, we might as well make the payments for another year and trade that expiring contract when its worth something.  Might as well come away with a cheeseburger at least.

I forgot to mention that I was happy to hear that House is a priority as well.  I'd really like to see him back with the team.  I was also happy to hear that Paul is in Posey's ear.  Hopefully Ray and KG gang up on Posey as well and convince him to stay.

I would really like him to stay.

The more I think of it would it be the end of the world to offer him a 4 yr deal
ok he would be 35 when the contract ended, but our salary payments will go down by 10 million next year and Ray's contract comes off the year after.

I just watched Posey sticking some momentum changing 3's in the finals on you tube again and when Ray got raked in the eye in game 6 it was Posey that took Kobe completely out of his rhythm which help start the rout.

Is it the end of the world to just give this dude a 4 yr deal worth 4 million?

right now I bet danny is offering approx 4 for 3 yrs. Pierce stated it wasnt the full MLE

You're fixated on the length. Posey wants more money period, that's why the agent has been talking all that crap about him getting full MLE offers for 5 years from some teams.

More than the length, it's the amount they'll pay him, and more important than that, in my opinion, is how much they'll have to pay this starting year.

Not that big of a stretch when you consider all the spinning that has gone this past year to rationalize all his previous "bad trades". Ray Allen is also expiring next year, did Danny purposely calculated for those two to expire at the same time? Hmm, makes you think on who'll jump at the opportunity once Scal is gone and we somehow get some value for him.

Nope it wasn't me, nor would I ever say that. Just pointing out on how fickle the fanbase is. At one point a person will be a complete idiot for doing something, later somehow redeem himself by doing something unexpected, then someone will come along to explain to us how he's a genius.

Try again.

You know, as a non-Scal fan, I have to ask, why 5 years? Okay I understand that Danny saw something in this guy he liked. I can't see it, but he did. I just can't see that the demand was so great that he had to make a 5 year deal. I would bet my house that 3 years at 3 mill would have gotten him signed and it would be over and done now. Can someone just wxplain why he felt the need to tie this guy up for 5 years? Did he think that Scal would be putting up such fantastic numbers that he would lose him after 3? If that's the case, he was sadly mistaken. I don't see a great demand for him around the league right now.

That being said, Danny made some great moves last tear and won a championship, so I will give him a pass on this one.

No, no.  You need to talk in your angry "moderator voice" to get people's attention.

For some reason your angry moderator seems more effective when it's in green and not red. Just saying...

Well, the green "angry moderator" voice is reserved for me.  wdleehi generally uses red, and Redz has been known (ironically enough) to use orange.

Perhaps IP could use blue?  Purple?

;)

Ironically i think Danny thought that 3 mil a yr for 5 yrs was a good deal for us as Scal was a solid bench player on a good New Jersey team that always made the playoffs.

There was also some brain typing that had him as the same brain typing as Michael jordan if im not mistaken

I have been known to use the blue

How about the yellow?   People will argue less as they get a headache trying to read the warning.

Remember, Scal was on the bench in street clothes because of how vastly improved the team became over the last year. At the time of his signing, he was projected to be a more substantial contributor... But the C's added KG, RA, Posey, House, Brown, Sam, Big Baby and Pollard in just the last year (Sam and Brown in the last few months of the season)

And I think Scal actually started a handful of games this year and was in the rotation for some of the season, plus you have to add in the "Greg Kite" factor in terms of Scal's value as a hard practicing player... Just saying he's not a total waste of space.
Now, on to 18...

  • You know my methods, Watson.
scal was signed as a veteran presence on a team full of kids who didn't know how to be professionals, much less play the game.

honestly, the signing didn't bother me...not even the money.  but FIVE years?  that's the part that was disturbing.  ainge outbid himself, as there was no need for a deal that foolishly long.
