The Globe reported that Giddens hasn't signed his contract yet. What gives? It's a Slotted salary? We need to get him into camp! I want to see what he can do against Pruit.

I know he was advised not to come. Why hasn't he signed yet? It's a standard contract with a slotted salary, right?

Quote
J.R. Giddens might have been swayed by all of the trappings - the championship banners and retired numbers - when he met the media in the Celtics [team stats]’ Waltham practice facility Tuesday.

But the impending rookie also has business sense. Unable to reach a quick agreement on his rookie contract with the Celtics, the guard declined to participate in the start of yesterday’s rookie and free agent camp.

By late morning, he had flown back to his home in Oklahoma City.

Bill Walker, the second-round choice the Celtics purchased for cash from Washington, had knee surgery at New England Baptist Hospital and also was unable to participate.

Semih Erden, the 6-foot-11 center taken with the final (60th) pick of last Thursday’s draft, is under contract to his Turkish team for one more season and was not in attendance.

The Celtics coaching staff, headed this week by assistant Armond Hill, was left with a list of 14 free agents, in addition to regulars Glen Davis and Gabe Pruitt.

“I’d prefer that he was here,” director of basketballl operations Danny Ainge said of Giddens. “But what can you do? We have to see how things work out.”

The issue, according to his agent, is complicated.

“There’s a lot of unusual circumstances with the Celtics and their salary structure, considering that they’re coming off the championship and things like that,” Mark Bartlestein said. “It’s really complicated. So much is going on, and they’re trying to figure out where they are with the luxury tax, things like that. So we’ll see how it goes.”

So is Danny trying to get this kid for cheaper than the rookie contract?  I thought the salary was already set and if Danny wants to sign him, he'd have to give him what the rookie scale contract is, right? What difference does it make what the Celtics' salary structure is if they are going to have to pay him what the league says he is to be paid? I don't get why he's not signed yet.

I think we're going to need some help from Mr. Hobbs on this one. :D

Does anyone think this is a bad move on Giddens' part?

Sounds like Danny is busy doing other things OR they might be playing with deal structure for luxury tax components.  One would think they had the first round pick placed in their salary structure before they made it.  Otherwise, they could have done what New Orleans did.

Ya, the whole Giddens playing in Europe angle is quite disturbing.  I've never heard of the every even being discussed for an American first-round draft choice.  It seems to me that the Celtics have so many roster spots to fill (6) that one player at $800K or so is a good deal - especially one that may be able to contribute next year like Giddens.  It seems like maybe the C's want to pull that BS of only have 12-13 players on the roster.  Come on Wyc, just ante up the $$ you made from the title run and sign the guy.  How frustrating would it be if you got drafted and then your team wouldn't sign you for the slotted amount, and you couldn't participate in the first mini-camp?  Ugh!

JR is freaking RETARDED!!!
You don't just come to the defending champ as a rookie with a sketchy past, demanding a contract and skipping rookie camp!! That says a lot about JR right there!

I don't know who he is, and I don't know how he plays, but if he wants to crack the roster, he should not have done what he has. His agent is retarded as well! you have to think long term. Get Celtics excited about JR and then get the contract!

DUMB DUMB DUMB!!!

I wouldn't call JR retarded.  You do know that he is following the advice of his attorney, right?... a professional who JR probably feels knows what he is doing.  He has the same agent as Posey and House, right?  Maybe the agent is playing hardball with Ainge because of the Posey situation.

Also, I don't think Ainge looks so great in this situation either.  He picked the kid and from what I understand Giddens is slated to get a certain amount according to the rookie scale contract.  Could you negotiate the amount of the contract for a 1st round pick?  I thought you could not.  If you can't then what the heck is Ainge doing?  He's trying to get all of Bartlestein's(sp) clients on the cheap.

Ainge, sign the kid already! >:(

It would be retarded to go to camp without a contract.  What if he blows out a knee?

the R word should be used carefully, it is quite offensive IMO - the only time I think it should be used is if a person really is mentally retarded, or in the verb sense (which is almost never used) - if something is slowed down, like traffic was retarded by the turtle crossing the street... anyways, that's a no no word in the adult world, makes one look ignorant for using it

Bartlestein is the agent that stuck the Jason Kidd deal in the muck, correct? If I am wrong Mea Culpa.

I wonder if the Celtics put in a clause about conduct and detriment to the team and that is what is holding this up. After the Tony Allen pistol whip, I wouldn't put it past them. With the letting go of TA, they need Giddens to be a defensive stopper.

It is smart to not play in camp without a contract but I always thought the contracts were a formality at this point? He is slotted to make a certain amount of money. It's a rookie scale.

If this is WYC not wanting to pay. I would retort, I don't like the fact that my season tix are going up 30% so pay for the freakin' player. From the title run and the most games EVER played in an NBA season (including preseason and postseason) there should be more than enough money. GEEZ!

So when he signs in a couple of days, we'll have something else to talk about.

I would just like to see him in Minicamp and get a guage of where he is against Pruitt. As of now, those are backups for the 1,2,3, correct? It would be nice to get him into camp and start to learn the system.

It's not necessarily an exact figure for the contract, there's a range... also, you have to consider if Danny is trying to get him for a 3 year contract, etc.

It's not bad advice to have JR not play yet, and it's not dumb from JR to listen to that advice. At the moment, his health is the best bargaining power he has. Wouldn't want to get hurt during negotiations.
