No summer league:

The Celtics will not be sending a rookie-free agent league to play in Las Vegas this year, but will hold a camp in Waltham next week … First-round pick J.R. Giddens, who watched the draft with teammates and his Coach Steve Alford in New Mexico, will be in Boston next week … Paul Pierce, appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel show Wednesday night, said the Celtics are planning a team party in Las Vegas this weekend.

They won't have a team in Las Vegas period? If so, this is sad....I always enjoyed watching young Celtics in the Vegas Summer league

I really don't get not having a summer league team. They could have a starting 5 of:

Pruitt
Giddens
Walker
Powe (maybe)
Davis

The rest of the guys you just invite. I'm sure there are a ton of guys not drafted that would kill to have a chance to get some exposure. I've even seen teams like the Spurs play summer league and not have 1 guy a recognized from their team

Anyone hear who will be playing in the Celtics rookie / free agent camp?  So far I guess we have Gidden and a hurt Walker, not much of a camp so far.  Sounds more like a slumber party.

Why should we showcase other players for other teams we're competing with? That's absolute nonsense. The summer league shows absolutely nothing. So what that Gerald Green can dunk on some clown that isn't even going to play in the NBA? What does that prove? 90% of the players that participate don't ever suit up an NBA uniform. We don't need this at all.

Couple more supporting points:

Powe and Davis were key contributors on a championship team. Their stock is up, and there is no reason to put them in summer league where they could reveal some warts (Assuming one of them will be dealt).

Pruitt dominated the D-League last winter. There is no reason to ask him to dominate D-League players this summer.

Walker is injured.

Giddens is a 4+ year college product. We will get more by making him work on his free throw shooting and by making him learn the Celtics defense than by asking him to dunk on guys that will never play a minute in the NBA.
"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

The decision not to participate in Summer League was made a long time ago.

The one downside for not participating in SL is it may make it a little harder to get rookie FAs to join the summer camp since they won't get exposure to other organizations other than the Celtics.

Here is the 2007 Spurs Summer League roster. Recall they won the NBA title that summer.

C.Watson
J.White
D.Harvey
M.Williams
J.Butler
M.Sommerville
C.Lee
M.Haryasz
C.Gadson
F.Adjiwanou
V.Sanikidze
K.Langford
D.Hardy
R.Koundija
R.Melzer

2007-2008 Spurs Roster
T.Duncan
R.Horry
M.Finley
T.Parker
J.Vaughn
I.Udoka
M.Bonner
F.Oberto
D.Johnson
F.Elson
K.Langford
D.Washington

The only player from the Spurs Summer league team to play for them is Keith Langford. And he only played on a 10 day contract. So why did the World Champion Spurs have a summer league team? I think they thought it would be good to look at players showcasing their skills. Although your World Champions, you never know when you might have injury problems and have to sign a few 10 day contracts. Plus, it gives assistants a chance to get some head coaching experience.

I agree it would have been nice to have a team and I think it could have done some good for Giddens and Pruitt.  Regardless of it being summer league, it's game speed, no matter what is done at practice, it's gonna be a step below game speed  It would have been nice to get those two working together as both may be contributors off the bench next season.
do it

Yeah, thank God. Who would want to model after the most dominant team in the league over the last 10 years?

Summer league is a good way to evaluate players. The games are fun to watch.  Also, it's an opportunity to do some favors for agents, which is never a bad thing, even for a championship caliber team.

Does anyone have a list of players who will be at the Celtics' rookie/free agent camp?

As a Cs fan, I'd like to see Pruitt and Giddens this summer, but there's no reason for the Cs to field a team less than a month after winning the title, regardless of what the Spurs did last year.

We're at the top of the basketball world now, and as Cs fans we have to break out old mindset of obsessing over young players and their potential.

This sums up my thoughts about that:

"In the Greek games of the ancient world, the victor was crowned with a laurel wreath. But the winner could not "rest on his laurels" if he wanted to remain a champion. Every athlete learns this truth from experience. A sure and quick way to go downhill from the peak of performance is to stop training when the race or season is over and just rest on past accomplishments".

The only player I've heard is Brian Butch from Wisconsin.

Quote
Two NBA teams will take a closer look at Brian Butch in the next few weeks.

The former Wisconsin forward will be in Boston next week to participate in the Celtics minicamp. ...

"He's in a good spot," agent Scott Alexander said. ...

According to Alexander, Butch had a good workout with the Celtics and general manager Danny Ainge was impressed with how well the big man moved and shot the ball, particularly from three-point range. Boston doesn't have a summer team, but Alexander is hoping that Butch's the time in Boston will allow the team to get to know him better as well as see how he might fit on to its roster.
