Three news articles about Pat Riley's devious plans for the #2 pick.

(All via TrueHoop)
Quote
David Moore of The Dallas Morning News: "Did you really believe Pat Riley would stay in the shadows and allow the Minnesota Timberwolves to dictate the top of the draft? Did you actually think Riley would accept whomever falls to No. 2 rather than take an aggressive approach to alter an underachieving Miami roster? Riley is no longer the coach of the Heat. The mind games he once employed on his players are now focused on his counterparts around the league."

Greg Stoda of the Palm Beach Post: "They are 'chips' in the parlance of Heat President Pat Riley, and, oh, how he loves them. Those, by Riley's definition, are attractive commodities in the NBA trade market. Now, he holds two of the precious items -- the No. 2 pick in tonight's draft and forward Shawn Marion and his expiring monster contract. The guess here is that Riley won't be able to resist dealing one or the other, or perhaps even both. It's precisely the kind of circumstance that makes Riley such an intriguing figure."

Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: "No sooner had the Heat exited the May 20 NBA Draft lottery with the No. 2 overall selection, then Pat Riley said he would attempt to 'leverage' the pick. Now, with the NBA Draft mere hours away, Riley seems to have leveraged an entire league. Unlike other team executives who are openly bemoaning the abject confusion or simmering about the draft's lack of clarity, Riley has remained mum on the Heat intentions for weeks. That silence has reached the point where Memphis point guard Derrick Rose said Wednesday he has not had contact with Riley since the late-May NBA draft camp."

I mean you get the feeling that ol Riles is some kind of criminal mastermind, and this IS Riley's playoffs. What do you think he'll get out of it? OJ Mayo, Al Jefferson, Fred Hoiberg's wife and Kevin McHale's sweater selection?

So he's holding the league hostage for not revealing before the draft what he intends to do with his pick or Marion?  Why is he supposed to reveal what he intends to do before the draft?

Ha. No, but I think its funny how much people portray Riley as reveling in the role of "chipholder"...you get the feeling that some guys are taking a pretty laisse faire attitude towards the draft..but Riley...

the marion trade was stupid...even more stupid would be to pass on beasley.

riles is putting together a team that he doesn't like, so now he's trying to buy time to un-do the mess he's created.

so much for the slick-haired genius... ::)

The marion trade was genius.  They got their ring out of Shaq.  Now they don;t have to wait for his contract to end.   marion is now the biggest trade piece in the NBA.

Why not try to trade Beasley, Marion and Blount to the Clippers for Brand and Kaman?

The the Heat can use Haslem to get a PG.

I love that we don't know what the Heat are going to do.  We pretty much know what the Bulls are thinking but it's nice that they haven't announced it already.  I hate when the NFL does that.  The first few picks are already known and all that time is spent for no reason.  There is a lot of suspense is this draft, especially one as unpredictable as tonight.  Reason number 153 why the NBA Draft is better than the NFL Draft.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

I enjoy the NBA draft, but the NFL draft is still better.

I think there is some kind of unwritten code to telling everyone else what you're going to do when you know what you're going to do, that way everyone can be prepared and not look like idiots on the one day they're supposed to be REALLY prepared.

Does anyone remember that draft video from a few years ago when Colangelo is on the phone trying to pump Ainge for information about Marcus Williams and Colangelo is saying things like "Of course it's within the rules, Danny!"  I thought it was the funniest clip like some guy sitting around at a fantasy draft saying, "Hey man, is Big Papi's knee ok?" and the other guy saying "We really shouldn't be sharing information like this."  Danny seemed like such an uptight jerk it was hilarious.  Like his Mormon-o-meter turned on and he decided he couldn't bend rules or more like he didn't want to give anyone else an edge he thought he had, so he calls up "the rules."

This definitely sounds like Riley, though, giving himself a little bit of an advantage by breaking the "unwritten rules" (if my theory holds any water).
We're the ones we've been waiting for.

I think that comes down to how much of the college sports you watch.  I personally can't get into college football because there is no championship tournament at the end.  I maybe knew 5 players who were picked in the first round, and that was mostly from ESPN's nauseating coverage of it.

I have ESPNU at school and between that and having games on the other ESPN channels 5 nights a week or so I feel like I know a lot more of these guys.  Also there are fewer of them, and the picks come a lot quicker.

I watched the NFL Draft for about ten minutes this last year.  I plan to watch all of tonight's Draft.  But then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

i don't think people are lining up to trade for shawn marion like you seem to believe they are...the guy is not as good without nash next to him.

afterall, none of us here would trade pierce for him...he's become a "second tier" player.

How have you seen the guys in the NFL draft more?  While NBA guys come out earlier, and people have rarely seen the Euros play, college football guys play about 1/3rd as many games, and play a smaller percentage of each game, with a higher number of players on the field.  Now that highschoolers are out of the mix, we see 80% of the major prospects for at least a season or two.

Except for the super-hyped skill position guys, you have to follow college football fairly closely to get a good sense of individual players.  Though, the endless saturation coverage of the NFL draft/combine/individual workouts/Wonderlic scores/what some linebacker had for breakfast today helps a bit with that, but I do my best to avoid all that stuff, it drives me crazy.

i gotta believe that any team with a decent point guard would love to have marion. he disappeared at the end of last year when there was no nba worthy point guard on the team. do you expect ricky davis to be throwing ally-oops to him?

of course we wouldn't trade pierce for marion - they're 2 different players and pierce fits the needs of the celtics and marion doesn't. that said - i would love to see what marion would do starting next to rondo for a few years. marion isn't top 10 - but he never has been. he's an all star caliber player in the east, and any team with a decent point guard would reap the rewards.

funny, but when we sucked we were all but ready to trade pierce for marion last year...now we would never consider that deal.

that's my point: how MANY good point guards are out there and do those teams have the assets to deal for marion?

marion is not that good in and of himself...riley may have gotten stuck with a guy that really can't help him, and i hope no one out there helps him out.  he's putting together a team of misfits and awkward pieces that don't fit.

Who is this "we" I would have never traded Pierce for Marion. It's annoying how posters lump together posts of haters as the collective will of Celtic fans. Pierce had his backers - here and on other boards and they were vindicated..as was DA for holding onto him. Marion is vastly overrated. He cannot take over games and create his own shot at will. And that's something a 3 can normally do..
