Derrick Rose said one of his goals for his rookie season is to be MVP of the league. He knows that talk is a little crazy. But he's also not going to give it up. Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that." You know how loves to hear that list? Paul Pierce. Two months ago, no way he makes the cut.

May be because he recently won the Finals MVP, but nonetheless, I feel that it will be widely agreed that the Celtics are entering next season with two of the league's top 10 players.

I remember Peter May mocking the idea that Pierce was a top ten player...
Now, on to 18...

That's why Peter May no longer writes for the Globe and Pierce is the Finals MVP.  :)

If I recall, he took a buyout.

Pierce may not be the best athlete, decision-maker, shooter or leader, but altogether it makes him a Top 10 player in the league right now. He's going to retaliate upon Rose for those words. I've lost all my respect for him.

Its real nice to see Pierce get his due. After 10 years of watching great (but quiet) performances from 34, it was really nice to see him deliver the way we all thought he could. His performance from game 7 against CLE and through DET, LAL, soldified him as a big time player.

Is he top 10 in the league? Yes. There are lots of guys who have more athleticism and potential, "value". But if you had to build a team that had to win a seven game series (after a bit of post-finals rest mind you) right now, you'd have to include Pierce.

Humm?

These words prove that Rose is definitely a very decent and intelligent kid.

Yeah, I think P2 misread the article. He was praising Pierce by calling him a superstar.

Rose only said this part

"Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."

After the quotes Henry Abbot said

You know how loves to hear that list? Paul Pierce. Two months ago, no way he makes the cut.

So yeah you can keep your respect for Rose as he called Pierce a superstar.

Yeah, sorry man.... let me clear it up:

Derrick Rose said one of his goals for his rookie season is to be MVP of the league. He knows that talk is a little crazy. But he's also not going to give it up. Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said:
Quote

You know how loves to hear that list? Paul Pierce. Two months ago, no way he makes the cut.  - Henry Abbott

Also, from all the interviews I've seen, Rose seems like one of the nicest and most level-headed kids to come out in a while... so I highly doubt he'd ever say anything derogatory to an established star like that.

Oh, now I get it. It wasn't Rose who said Pierce wasn't a superstar two months ago. And quite frankly, I've never had respect for Abbott. He picked the Lakers in 5.

He's not alone in saying that Pierce would not have been thought of in those other player's light as recently as a couple months ago.

I like Abbott.... he seems to be like the father on basketball blogging.  And he's certainly far from the only person to pick the Lakers.
