I don't see why it would fuel the fire of people accusing him of faking. The faking thing should of been washed away when he said he was scared because he heard a loud pop from his knee, so he took precautions thinking it was way worse.
I once had an injury in gym class where I heard my hip pop and it hurt like crazy, I was taken in a wheel chair out of the place to a doctors, and nothing serious happened and I was able to walk out of the place. It's just the thought that something really serious could happen to you. Especially in his case where it could maybe end his profession.
