I have been looking into the Celtics salary cap options to make some extra money available for signing Posey and reworking one of the Big 3's deal seems like the best method.

I know that NBA player cannot rework their deals to take less money, but they can take their money in different years.

Now KG's deal dips $6m in 09/10, so that would be a year we could move some of Paul or Ray's money into in order to free up space to sign Posey.

My question is that I know a player cannot rework a deal unless (1) it's a 4 year or longer deal and (2) they have completed at least year 3 of that deal.

Now Paul signed an extension in 2006 ... does that mean he cannot rework his deal until 2009?

Ray signed an extension in 2005 ... so we should be able to rework his deal right?

Either way, I would love to see us move some of Paul or Ray's money into 09/10 (thanks to the KG salary dip I mentioned above) to free up money for 08/09 that we could use to re-up Posey.

Would be interested to hear other people's thoughts on the wisdom of this move and the logistics of pulling it off.

Here's the rule on renegotiating:

Quote
Only teams under the cap can renegotiate a contract, and the salary in the then-current season can be increased only to the extent that the team has room under the cap. Raises in subsequent years are limited to 10.5% of the salary in the first renegotiated season.  The renegotiation may not contain a signing bonus.  Contracts cannot be renegotiated downward (players can't take a "pay cut" in order to create salary cap room for the team) or to contain fewer seasons.

Renegotiation isn't an option, because we're well over the salary cap.
