I disagree with this (and I think Danny is on record saying he doesn't want his number retired). I love Danny more than anyone, his performance this year might be the greatest single season from an executive in charge of a sporting team. It's certainly up there in the top five. But we retire numbers for great players. As a franchise we've gone a little overboard in that regard already. And though it's easy to get swept up in the winning fervor, it's not quite the right tribute. The next number to hang will be 34 and that's just fine by me.
What I hope for Danny is that he stays on as Exec. Dir. of Basketball Operations and maybe someday becomes a Red-like figure for the franchise. Then in 25 or 30 years we do something special for Danny like we have for Red or Johnny Most, etc. Something not quite as big as Red's name on the court...but something appropriate.
Just my two cents on that one.
