It depends what you consider a role player, but there are some Celtics who have their numbers retired despite some mediocre career numbers, including K.C. Jones (7.4 ppg, 4.3 apg), Don Nelson (10.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg), Tom Sanders (9.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg), Cedric Maxwell (12.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Jim Loscutoff (6.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg).

Those guys never put up huge numbers, but all were key contributors in terms of winning, and Red recognized that in retiring their numbers (or their name, in the case of Loscy.)

its pretty rare, I think NJ retired Petrovic, but that's for different reasons - I think Loscy was supposedly an average player - an enforcer type, and he's up there, but again not common - I'm surprised Rodman isn't retired in Chicago, he brought so much to 3 title teams

here's a full list:

http://www.nba.com/history/retired_numbers.html

after looking, surprises are:

Chicago - no Pippen or Rodman

NJ - retired Buck Williams

Minnesota - retired Malik Sealy - I know its a bit taboo to say, but it seems if a player dies while on a team, his number is automatically retired, any exceptions to this? Petrovic, Bobby Phills, Reggie Lewis all up there...Len Bias I don't think had a number, plus never played a game

Sac Kings retired #6 for their fans...weird

and maybe the worst retired number of all time: Utah Jazz #53 Mark Eaton

how about the Celts win this title first before we go off worrying about retiring #44 ........... much less #'s 34, 5, or 20.

and someone actually mentioned Posey's name. i really like Posey & House, but all #41 has done so far is to hit a few 3 pointers and play good defense for one season.

[dang], you guys get carried away.
we need one more win - let's get that first !!!

Jason Collier, I think it was died with the Hawks a few years back and I don't think they retired his number.

I think it should go right with this #.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
i'm probably in the minority here, but i don't see danny's jersey qualifying to be in the rafters...good player, and most definitely a winner, but some of you number crunchers need to prove this one to me.  :) (and i'm more than willing to change my mind if a good argument can be made...)

I've been a big Ainge fan since his playing days in Boston. But I don't think #44 should be retired at this point. I think retired numbers should be reserved for very special occasions. I don't even think #34 is guaranteed to be retired - at least not yet. If Ainge were to guide this franchise to another handful of titles over the next 10-20 years, then maybe you'd have to think about it.

Just a guess of mine.  The numbers don't necessarily justify Danny's number going to the rafters but it does puts him in the discussion along with the 2 title teams he was a part of.  The architect of a world championship team is the thing that puts Danny over the top and into rafter material (at least in Wyc's mind along with some others).

Again, I'm just trying to rationalize it.

that list is inaccurate. scottie pippen definitely has his number retired by the bulls.

What constitutes "very special", though?  Danny was a starter on two championship teams here as a player (and played in the Finals two other years), and may bring another title as a GM.  Is that really so different than the contributions of some of the other retired guys, who didn't put up huge numbers?
