I was just wondering who here thinks Paul Pierce is a top 50 all time player?

I think he could if wins a ring or two and I think this because I have seen Paul Peirce take over games like few others, also I know he doesn't really make the best decisions in the clutch but is anyone else here with me in saying that in a game with 3 seconds on the clock and our ball in Pauls hands I'm not worried.

Thoughts?

I don't think so. I love Pierce, my favorite Celtic ever, but I don't think he's top 50 all-time, right now. There's a possibility, though.

Yeah, I don't think he cracks the Top-50.  Who would he replace from the NBA's list of top-50 players, even without counting contemporaries (such as Kobe and Lebron) who didn't make the list the first time?

Right now, no.  But if he wins the MVP by out dueling Kobe, he should be considered.

Rip Hamilton out dueled Kobe a few years ago and has a ring. Is he top 50? ::)

1) Rip hasn't had nearly the career Paul has had yet statistically speaking and in terms of All Star games.

2) Rip can't take over games like Paul or Kobe.  I'd hardly call Rip's performance in 2004 out dueling Kobe.  It was more a case of a poorly constructed, selfish team (the Lakers), who didn't know how to play with each other losing to a Detroit team by a freakish accident.  If that series was played 100 times, the Lakers would win 99, which makes Detroits' victory even more ridiculous than the Giants' victory over the Pats this year.

He's already a top 100 player though nobody has done a definitive top 100 list.  Only Inside Hoops has taken a crack at it.

Here are some familiar names and where they are listed according to them

77. Ray Allen
78. Dennis Johnson
79. Paul Pierce

Just thought it was interesting they sandwiched DJ.   Honestly I think all three of them are Top 75 (right now) and rated a little low, but I would think top 50 (at this point) is too high.  Or for your info KG is #37 (I think he's top 30) Kobe is ironically #24 and I think he may deserve top 20 so this is just a guide of how (some) people think.

Here is the entire list if you want to peruse (don't take it too seriously)

Ahhh yes, "peruse"... one of the most commonly misused words in the English language...

The actual definition is "To read or examine, typically with great care."

Just joshin' ya though, no ill intent.

Absolutely not true. That Detroit team was their best team and they've been competitive every year since then. That was nothing near a fluke. And as much as the Lakers were fighting too much, they had been doing that throughout the playoffs and that didn't stop them from making the Finals. A superior team beat them. The Pistons earned that title because they were a better team than the Lakers. At that time, they were the best team in the league. They had 4 legit All Stars (only at that point, they didn't have the notoriety yet) they had a Hall of Fame coach, they had the best defense in the league (maybe as good as or better than our defense this year), they got along, they knew each other, they won convincingly, 4-1 if I'm not mistaken. Remember, they took the Spurs to 7 the following year (including a one-point overtime loss at home).

If they played that series 100 times, MAYBE the Lakers would win 30 times, but I don't think so. The Pistons just wanted it more and had been underappreciated because of the widespread belief that whoever came out of the East was just a sacrificial lamb and the Western Conference Finals was the real Finals. Sound familiar?
Go Celtics.

Why is Vince Carter higher than Paul Pierce? He was more well known and popular but I think Paul Pierce quietly outplayed Carter throughout their careers.

I don't think head-to-head history comes much into play between two players when making lists like this. They are pretty neck and neck in terms of stats, and I have a feeling if these was redone after this year, Pierce would unquestionably be ahead of Carter.

I think Paul is the one of the best pure scorers that the Celtics ever had.  He is probably #50

I'm not talking about head-to-head history, though. They are neck and neck when it comes to stats but I think Pierce has had the better career so far.
