I'm a high school soccer coach, and one season, my senior captain tore his miniscus in the first game of the season. His doctor told him he could have surgery and end his season, or play through the pain and have the surgery afterward. He decided to play through it (pretty tough kid). It obviously affected him, but was able to play pretty well. Our physical trainer at school then told me that at her previous job, a senior football player played 4 games with a partially torn ACL, and had surgery after the season.

If I were Pierce, and I could handle the pain, I'd try to play. There is no guarantee he'll ever get to the finals again.

However, who could blame him if he sat out?

I can pretty much guarantee that Pierce won't sit out ... this is his lifetime dream, and he'll push through whatever pain he has. Also, I doubt seriously this is an ACL, but most likely a strained miniscus, and he'll be OK. If this was an ACL or PCL, chances are he wouldn't have been back out on the floor playing, or even walking afterward.

If anyone is concerned about the long term...
Getting back to the kid who played soccer for me, and tore his miniscus...

Right after the season, he had surgery, and was 100% and cleared to play 6 weeks later. He even went on to set the school record in the 400 hurdles that spring. It's easier for an 18 year old than someone in his 30's, but this is probably not a serious long term deal, if it is just the miniscus.

I hope you are right!  In a earlier post you mentioned this could be a knee contusion. Just curious, would you hear a loud pop with an injury like that?

I think if there is any doubt that Pierce can go Sunday, THAT is the game he should sit out.  A home game where we are up 1-0 is a better time to give him an extra rest than on the road when we will absolutely need him.   Start Posey and run him at Kobe a little more often so that Ray can focus more on offense. I think that is a winnable game, and even if we lose, I like our chances for 3 straight LA road games with a Pierce closer to 100% than us expending all this energy in game 2 (win or lose) and Pierce hobbled for the entire series because he came back too soon.  Regardless if he sits game 2 he'll be back Pierce has RIDICULOUS powers of recovery and threshold for pain (a nameless unfortunate summer incident showed us that) but I hope while we are ahead in the series we don't rush Pierce back if we don't have to.  Thoughts

I find it rather strange that Pierce didn't get an MRI. Maybe he did and the celtics don't want to talk about it right now. I believe he is hurt, and wants to play, and they don't want to give LA much info on how bad the injury really is.

I'm not a doctor, but I get the feeling that regardless of what this is, it's not going to get much worse playing on it and it doesn't appear to be career threatening.  As long as that's the case, he'll play, and he should.  There's no guarantee he'll ever be here again.

i've torn a medial meniscus twice in my life.  Played an entire football season on one.  Tore it again after getting it fixed and ran a marathon on the thing.  Not meaning to sound like a Has Been Harry, just trying to to be positive.  He gets treatment and will probably have to wear a Tony Allen RoboCop brace, but he'll be ready to go Sunday.

1. I'm no doc, but how can they possibly know the extent of the damage without an MRI?
2. As long as it doesn't impinge his lateral movement, Pierce is probably more suited to playing through a knee injury than most NBA players. His game (unlike that of Tony Allen, for example) is less dependent on his leaping ability.

Stephania Bell, physical therapy expert re injuries at ESPN.com, gives an excellent description of the nature of Pierce's injury. see link below.

TP for an excellent link, a good read.

Hello all! I'm a registered MRI technologist with 20 yrs experience.  I've performed thousands of knee MRI procedures, and all I can say is that knee injuries are VERY subjective, especially when it comes to meniscal trauma. Tears can be very minor, to severe, but it is VERY difficult to guess that by how a patient walks, hobbles or is wheeled thru the door.
I've seen fairly severe tears, where I'd question why the patient was even having the exam done, and others groaning in pain, with the slightest tear! So basically it comes down to what the patient can tolerate!
Of course PP could make a slight tear much worse, but at this stage of the playoffs I think he's willing to deal with it, and deal with the extent of a surgery later! (pain on the inside of the knee would also seem to preclude an ACL OR PCL injury, which are more centrally located, and pretty much put you out of action completely!
Also, while it is helpful to wait til swelling subsides to perform a scan, with the many sequences available to us to show anatomy in different ways, it is not necessary.  PP probably didn't want the MRI, cause he's hell bent on playing regardless of what it might show!

PP needs to be able to move and jump. This idea that he doesn't need his leaping ability is hogwash. Over 90% of his shots are plays in which after creating space he jumps up and shoots over the outstretched arms of an opponent. There are no NBA players who can get away with limited mobility. NONE. When LB hurt his back he became a far inferior player. When Mchale hurt his ankle he was never the same..

talk about the worst possible time for this to happen! while i wouldn't put it past paul pierce to return to the hardwood and perform at a modestly high level, you have to be concerned. the lakers are going to look to exploit his lack of lateral quickness in this series. this is the NBA finals we're talking about! but i feel for pp. i guess i'm one of the few people who's been blessed to have never had a broken bone, and i have respect for anyone who can endure that kind of pain. you get mad tommy points from me. go paul! go c's!
