after reading the article, it makes me pine for the objective journalism only the [b
Boston Herald[/b] can afford

hahahaha. good one.

That was a joke, right? Lauding a tabloid that publishes the work of Howie Carr, Gerry Callahan and Jules Crittenden as a source of "objective journalism" had better be.

Please don't mistake the LA Times with Laker fans.  Trust me Laker fans cannot stand most of the Sports writers at the LA Times.  This includes Plaschke, Bresnahan, and TJ Simers.  Bandwagon fans that will be on the Laker bandwagon if they win and off as soon as they lose.

 >:(

Yes, I totally agree.  Plaschke, it is known, rather than a reputable journalist should better employ his time following the example of some of the more misinformed and inflammatory homers that populate ground.net (the largest Laker fansite).  No true Laker fan, and I am not talking about the cockroaches that seem to be coming out of the woodwork, pays any attention to a great number of the so-called "journalists" writing for many of the southland rags.  I realise that perhaps on this site it may be an inconceivable proposition, but there is, as also in Boston, an informed and knowledgeable fanbase basketball-wise, that eschew both this type of "journalism", as well as the testosterone-dominated bubbleheads that always seem to come around only when a team wins.  I am sure that this also happens in Boston.  So, forget this jerk, the true Laker fans don't pay any attention to him or to his kindred journalistic spirits!

I'm a Laker fan... I read LA Times just for the Laker section (don't live in LA) and most of the time I am REALLY disappointed. But usually I am disappointed with TJ Simers who seems to be on crack... I am sorry to say that, but there it is. Plaschke is usually ok...

That said, when I read the article you guys are referring to I was just stunned... It just seemed so off, so artificial and so forced. I have no problem with Boston and neither do the Laker players. Kobe was talking after a practice yesterday that "most of us have known each other since we were 14, grew up together... there is no hate" (go to www.lakers.com to check the video of yesterday's post-practice comments) and I think it goes like this for most Laker fans as well. Hey, the last time we played in the Finals was 20 years ago... You want to talk hate most Lakers would bring up the Spurs (freakin' Spurs... shake my fist at them) or the Jazz (now that is a fan base Lakers and their fans can't stand).

I have no idea what Plaschke wanted to do with that article, but I for one lost respect for him after he wrote that. To tell you the truth, I am just in general sick and tired of all the "historical" references that the media is collectively salivating with. I watched Phil Jackson and Laker players give comments after their practice and the majority was about the historical significance. Jackson was interviewed for 5:33 minutes and only the last 15 seconds were about the actual match-ups... Same with the players... They asked Odom (was he even born in the 80s!?) about the significance instead of how he was going to guard KG!

It just all feels so forced... I think there is a level on which this is important (Boston with 16 titles trying to keep the Lakers with 14 from catching up to them), but on many contemporary levels this is complete media hype. And you know it fits so well with the current popular culture trends of trying to resurrect everything retro (from car designs, fashion to re-makes of popular 70s and 80s movies). But for me this is about the players themselves first... KG and Pierce wanting to prove that their stellar careers will be crowned with the ring and Kobe trying to redeem himself after years of being the public enemy #1.

What say in the offseason shouldn't influence mvp voting.  All that matters is your performance in the regular season and Kobe Bryant was the best player in the league.

no, chris paul was.

Kobe got it because it was a travesty he hadn't gotten it before (and im a die hard celtics fan, but that was ridiculous that he didn't win it before now.) and they didn't want to give it to a kid who was A) yet another PG and B) only in the league 3 years. I see the writers logic in doing it, and honestly have no problem with it, but paul was by far the more important player to his team.

While kobe was huge to the lakers, CP3 had no one. Now, your all going to say he has chandler and west, but before this season, no one thought those guys were anything like the stars their seen as now.

Kobe had fisher, odom, and a good bench. he also got a third allstar late in the season. If KG gets points off for pierce, then how can kobe not for playing with that cast?

i expect right around season 6 or 7, it won't matter what CP3's performance is, as long as he's up near the top he'll get a makeup lifetime achievement award, ala bryant from this year.

also, before laker fans go nuts on me, as i said, its fine with me that he won it, and he deserved one much earlier, but the award is a joke, it goes to whoever the writers feel is old enough and deserves it based on storylines, not facts. CP3 was the clear MVP Of this one season but kobe won it because he had gotten porked over by nash and deserved one about 3 years ago.

I've known about Chandler since he was in 8th grade...he was averaging 9 boards a game off the bench the last two years in Chicago...West was a 20-10 guy last year and Peja is a 3 time all-star.

Kobe played half the season with either Kwame or Ronny Turiaf starting at center. People not knowing who CP3 was playing with that isn't a good basis for not giving KB the award.

neither is that kobe's center was terrible, its the exact same logic you said didn't count for CP3. can't have it both ways. CP3 was the better player this year, but Kobe deserved to win it multiple times in the past, and got the life time achievement award.

more power to him

His lisp plays well in California. He's an LA jock sniffer that's for sure.  I've Never heard him say anything about how crooked USC is as well.  I'll say one thing for him at least he knows where his bread his buttered.

TP for the USC comment. There may not be a dirtier athletic department in college sports.
