McHale went out on a limb and drafted KG outta high school, took him under his wing, and spared no expense in signing and re-signing the Big Ticket to $100m contracts to keep him in MN. He tried every thing he could think of to build a championship team around KG. When that didn't work he traded KG to his old team, and made clear in a recent interview that he's watching the playoffs and appreciates what Boston has going.
But wasn't Flip one of his best friends from the U of M? A no-name on the national scene, Flip made a name for himself as a coach for the Timberwolves. McHale and Flip were like peas and carrots. When Danny hired Doc he said he wanted to have a relationship like Flip and the Black Hole.
So McHale has mixed feelings about this series, right?
Well, there was that little matter about chauncey billups. Yes, five or so teams passed on billups before he landed in detroit. So Minnesota was no different that the other four.
Upon closer review, however, it seems McHale claims flip told him that chauncey "didn't have it" and that's why the wolves passed. Flip claims he wanted to keep chauncey. Flip's tenure, of course, ended when he got canned by McHale.
So maybe McHale's feelings about this series aren't so mixed after all...
