Doc has done an excellent job this year. This is WHY?

1) (24 wins 06/07) < (66 win 07/08)
2) Managed "the big three" well
3) Developing Rondo/Perk/Powe/Davis
4) #1 Defensive Team in NBA
5) etc......

Having three superstars doesn't guarantee you success. It's proven that to when a title in the NBA you need at least 8-9 decent players. All he had to work with was "the big three" and bunch of nobodies. So lets show some love to Doc for taking a 24 win to NBA conference finals and a chance of putting #17 banner up.

No, no, no!  Don't ruin a perfectly good evening with a pro-Doc thread, which is going to bait his detractors (including myself) into responding.  Let's just enjoy the evening without falsely attributing credit or blame for this season to one man.

I will say it's odd for a Celtics fan to call players like Perk, Rondo, Posey, House, Cassell, etc., "a bunch of nobodies".  There's a lot of basketball talent on this roster, and there's no need to denigrate it to make Doc look better.

They're just unproven young guys. Lucky, they stepped up and grown a lot this season.

all i meant was unproven young guys

Yeah, but Posey (ring), Cassell (rings), Brown (15 years) and House (8 years) don't fall into that category.  And as RH points out, it seems by the "big three and bunch of nobodies" claim that those guys are included.  Not to nitpick -- just seemed worth clarifying.

just want to point out that PJ brown, house, BBD, Rajon, and Powe could all be considered "nobodies". Who expected a 40 year old PJ brown to hit those clutch shots that pretty much won us the game? House has been a journeyman in the NBA for years, BBD, Rajon and Powe were all late first round/secound round picks. Just seems to me Danny ainge did a great job of signing and drafting, I never expected any of the players above to contribute as much as they did this year. Its been amazing.

Your bold post is deserving of your first tommy point ;)

In my opinion, Doc has coached both atrociously and exellently (for which he does deserves credit)

However, a lot of the credit for their success has to go to Thibodeau and the leadership of the veterans on this team.

A bunch of "nobodies"?!? Wow ... now I've heard it all! Every team should have such a group of nobodies! Perk, Rondo, Posey, House, Powe, Brown, and even Davis, are far from "nobodies", and are an essential part of this team's winning season turn-around.

Hate to say it, but if you want a truer assessment of the difference Doc himself has made this year, to be completely fair you have to take his record from last year, (prior to the trade infusions), and average it with this years record, and for the regular season it would be around .444 ... a bit below average.

That's right about where Doc lies in this whole picture, and I concur. This is truly a bad time to be giving sole credit to Doc, (or any one person), for today's win, us being in the playoffs, or this winning season ... this was a team effort from the git, and Doc's a part of that team, no more, no less.

I disagree on the "bunch of nobodies statement" - at the beginning of the year, Perk, Rondo, Davis and Powe really were a bunch of nobodies - they had proven absolutely nothing in the league, had minimal trade value (though others did see the flashes in Rondo which made him attractive to the wolves). At this point, yes they are bonified NBA players - Powe is gonna get paid big in 2 years, Rondo looks like a borderline all-star, Perk's a beast and Big Baby has been a pleasant rookie surprise.  As for Cassell and Brown, one of them was putting up good numbers for the clippers and the other was retired...not exactly the type of thing that puts fear into others hearts.  Posey was not a nobody, he was a coveted free agent by many teams. House was and has been known as a regular season guy - his dips in the playoffs are a trend not an anomoly this season.  so I'd give the guys credit for making these players gel into a solid solid unit, capable of winning on the road in playoffs, capable of dethroning King James, capable of hunting some hawks, and in my opinion capable of bringing Green 17 to Boston.  Should Doc get credit for this? Absolutely.  Is he the only factor at play here?  Of course not, but to go to one extreme or the other - its all Doc's doing, or he has nothing to do with it, a caveman could coach this team, is silly and counterproductive

I didn't actually think he coached all that well last night.  He called a few timeouts which made zero sense.  Also, it seemed as if he didn't rest the big 3 like he normally does going into the 4th because he expected them to close it out, well they did not close it out which lead them to play an awful long time.  Some things I did like, his rotations were good last night.  Those should be the 9 that play.  The only questionable one would be Cassell who you can go to on a game to game basis and switch with House.  Big Baby should be playing over Powe.  His defensive rotations are much better and he brings much more energy which is needed on this team.
do it

Thank you Doc for not costing us this game with a plethora of game ending bad decisions. Or, Thank You Doc for winning 14 percent of the road playoff games!

Does that count as Love??

Audacious of you to dare to post for the love of Doc thread after a major win to this tough crowd! LOL

All caveats, clarifications and/or nitpicking aside presupposed: I for one believe a little love for Doc is in order too.

As with the players, he too isn't at all perfect and can be inconsistant, yet when they come together and overcome I find it easy to share some LOVE!

Love and a big Poze (((Hug))) for DOC  :-*

Doc has done a good job this year and in prior years. He knows the game. He always has kept his teams together. The media only talks about the players on what they accomplish on the basketball court and to a lesser extent community service (NBA cares). An NBA coach can't win if you don't have the veteran proven talent and for the last few years, the Celtics did not have the veteran proven talent.

This year, the defense has shown up.

Doc is outcoaching Flip Saunders this series with his adjustments.
