I understand this has been asked before -- but I am trying to prove out a theory.

How could you leave Tommy Heinsohn out?  10 rings and 50+ years in the Celtics organization.

Well I went with Russell first because I still believe he is the greatest all time.

You play a sport to win and that's exactly what he did. He is intelligent, a leader and interesting person. So what if he couldn't jump from the free throw line to dunk or score 100 points.

Russell was dominate when the league was at it's strongest with all the teams being strong in talent. And for the record as we all know, Chamberlain's numbers were always quite noticeably sub par against Russell.

Second was Larry Bird. Phenominal, had that winner killer instinct about him and could just toy people to death. He was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers I belive Tommy Heinsohn said.

Total oversight -- thanks!

Todd Day - not so much an oversight!  8)

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Its a two man race...what do you value: Bird capturing the imagination of an entire country or Russell winning...and winning...and winning.

It's not a matter of valuing one over the other though. People are getting two votes in the poll and everone is chosing the same two guys.

If you had to pick one over the other though that would be hard I'd still go with Russell because he became the foundation for the winning tradition.

So far, all 15 voters agree completely
that Bill and Larry are the best.

Should I limit it to just 1 vote?

Thankfully, we can vote twice. ;)

How is Red Auerbach not on the list? Everyone knows he was the greatest Celtic- that's why they named the court for him! Do any of the others have statues?
