This series reminds me of the 1984 Conference Semifinals versus the Knicks. It went 7 games, and Bernard King was phenomenal, but the Celtics prevailed. Each team won on its home court. The Celtics won all of their games by big margins. The Knicks won their three games by very small margins. You could see the Celtics were the much better team. Still, the will of one guy, King, stretched it to 7. Of course, the Celtics would go on to beat the Lakers in 7 games and win No. 15.
Here is to hoping we continue to parallel the '84 series!!!
I remember that series distinctly. With the sweep by Milwaukee still hanging over their heads the doom and gloom crowd was going absolutely nuts here in Boston. Bernard King had probably the best 7 game stretch of basketball in his entire career going for what seemed 35 to 40 points every game.
King had what was easily the fastest release of a shot after receiving the ball in the low post of any player I personally have ever seen. Bird, McHale, and Maxwell had nothing that could stop him. He'd catch the ball and already be in the air ready to launch a various array of baby hooks, fall backs, straight face the basket jumpers, one step lay ins, dunks. You name it he was doing it and abusing the hell out of anyone the Celtics put on him.
The MSG was rocking and even though it was clear to everyone that the Celtics were the better team, the Knicks fed off the energy in that building and pulled out the three wins riding on the back of King. He was immense.
TP4U for giving me some pleasant memories on this horrible morning after and for making your case. The Celtics have done this before and lived to win a championship. It could happen again.
