I must have missed something, but can someone fill me in as to why Perk started out game 5 with that face mask?

He got slammed hard in the nose in game 4. I didn't think it was bad enough for a facemask though. My DVR missed the first 8 minutes of the game last night and I didn't see that.

I too didn't think the hit Perk took in game 4 warranted a face mask for game 5, but I loved the look of Perk in a facemask. Suits him perfectly IMO and makes him all the more scary.

He didn't need it once the adrenaline got going.  But he sure did look silly playing a couple of seconds of live ball with the mask up on top of his head when he realized he didn't want to wear it anymore!!

I thought it strange too. And when Perk had it on top of his head, talk about doing what you're told and showing you don't like it.lol

I couldn't shake the image of how much he resembled "The Mailman" Malone, when he use to push his goggles to his forehead when shooting freethrows...lol

I love Perk(Tommy voice), for his game, nice flushes last night!!!

He was hit hard enough in the nose to need to wear nose plugs to stop the bleeding.  My guess is that the trainers may have felt that since he was hit once there they may target it again knowing that it was a sore spot and wanted it as a precaution.  Perk is tough enough not to need a face mask though.  I love Perk.

next time, if he wears one again, he should have it painted up like a hockey goalie's mask.

that would be sweet.

It's also possible that his nose was broken when he was hit.

He took a decent shot in Game 4. I thought it was a great when he tossed it aside. Perfect to his persona. Absolutely priceless. The crowd gave him a nice cheer when it went flying and geared them up even more.

You don't think the hit he took was hard enough to warrant a face mask?

1) He had cotton balls shoved up his nose the rest of the game to stop the bleeding.

2) His eyes were completely glazed over and bloodshot the remainder of the game.

3)  He was turning his face away from driving defenders while at the same time trying to make a play on the ball.

I would say if his nose hurt enough to cause him to play differently than usual, the face mask was more than warranted.

I'm also sure it was recommended by one of the team doctors.  Perk clearly was having trouble with the mask and threw it away in disgust to the avail of the crowd.

On another note

Antonio McDyess was also having face mask issues and threw his away part way through the Pistons game.  However, he has no excuse as he had the face mask master (Rip Hamilton)  to gain face mask comfort advice from.

All this face mask talk makes me wish the Bruins didn't get bumped out in the first round.  Maybe Perk can barrow Tim Thomas' mask for tonights game.
