It's not the end of the Clippers. So long as you don't over spend on the wrong players most teams can be in the middle of the NBA ranks. Tanking, injuries and dysfunction is what causes a team to hit the bottom. The new lottery mechanics also mean nothing is certain with a draft pick.

Correct.  In fact, statistically we don't want them to completely bottom out, as the bottom four teams get worse odds than the rest of the teams that miss the play-in.

A refresher on the details:

Expanded Lottery: The draft lottery expands from 14 to 16 teams, now including the teams that finish as the 8th seed or miss the playoffs/play-in entirely.

Relegation for the Worst Teams: Most non-playoff/play-in teams get 3 lottery balls. However, the bottom three teams are "draft relegated" and lose one ball, receiving only 2 balls to reduce their odds for the No. 1 overall pick.

Play-In Odds: The 9th and 10th seeds get 2 lottery balls, while the losers of the 7th vs. 8th play-in games receive 1 ball.

Pick Floors & Ranges: Relegated bottom-three teams are guaranteed no worse than the 12th pick. Other lottery teams can fall as far as 16th.

My sense is that LAC looked like a team headed to the lottery for the 2027-28 season before the penalties, and now if anything, they look even more like a lottery team.  PHI gets this pick outright, it is an unprotected trade of the pick.  If it is in the lottery and a better pick than then PHI's own pick, BOS gets to swap what will likely be the SAS pick after that swap.

As to the lottery odds changes, that is kind of neutral in my mind, it might help, it might hurt the value of the pick.  There is no reason for LAC to completely bottom out.  It is no better for them to finish lower.  I see them being more in the middle of the lottery.  I guess this depends on how well the anti-tanking rules work for other teams.  This pick has a very high ceiling and a relatively high floor in all likelihood.  Teams should want to trade for it.

I agree that it is most likely neutral. There's a chance it could work in our favor as players may ask out (they may not be able to attract talent either.  However, it could work against as as they have no incentive to tank. There's also the chance that players see it as an opportunity as they won't have to compete with lottery picks...In either case, I'm optimistic the draft pick will be good...And our second round picks are one pick better.

The swap with SAS would happen first (or not happen).  Everything else is based on which ever pick BOS ends up with (their own or the SAS pick).  It does not affect what BOS would be from PHI as part of the trade.

We get to swap with the better of PHI/LAC picks if LAC is in the lottery and PHI is in the bottom 8.

We get to swap with LAC's pick if LAC is in the lottery and PHI picks 9th - 30th.

We get to swap with PHI if PHI is in the bottom 8 and LAC finishes outside the lottery.

We get both our first (after the SAS swap) and LAC's first if LAC finishes outside the lottery and Philly finishes 9 - 30.
