Heat receive:
(Total Incoming $73M)
Giannis Antetokounmpo ($58M)
Bobby Portis ($15M)

Bucks receive:
(Total $48M Incoming, 3 firsts, 1 second, 1 swap)
Tyler Herro ($33M)
Kel'el Ware ($5M)
Jaime Jaquez Jr. ($6M)
Kasparas Jakučionis ($4M)
No. 13 pick in 2026 NBA Draft (Nate Ament)
First-round picks in 2031 and 2033
Pick swap in 2030
Second-round pick in 2033

I don't know how this went down, none of us do, but look at the deal.  Miami only sent back about $48M to absorb Giannis' $58M salary and then was able to take Portis' $15M into a TPE.  MIA absorbed $25M in excess salary in this deal, no way BOS was able to do that without sending back Hauser and at least one of Hugo or Scheierman, just to match salaries, never mind what MIL was asking for in terms of draft picks.

Quote
According to Shams Charania on ESPN, the deal ultimately broke down because Boston refused to include Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, and extra draft assets alongside Jaylen Brown.

What Shams reported is that MIL asked for Hugo and Baylor and "extra draft assets" (plural).  So that means Brown, Hugo, Baylor, at least 3 firsts, and more draft assets.  I don't know where people are getting to the idea that Brad didn't make a final offer or dropped the ball or whatever.  Per Shams, it sounds like MIL said this is our offer and Brad said no.  He may have countered with something less, maybe he thought MIL was bluffing, but if that is what it was going to take to get Giannis (which is what Shams is saying), do people want that deal?  None of this reporting supports the idea that if Stevens had just included Hugo or one more draft pick, that the deal would have gotten done.  The Shams reporting does not say this.

From MIL perspective, the MIA deal allowed them to dump significant salary and start over.  The BOS deal meant MIL would be extending (likely) and building around Brown or retrading Brown.  But no salary relief.  I think we can safely say now that the consensus around the league was that Brown is not worth a super-max deal in this new apron environment.  That his trade value on that contact was not as high as any of us thought.  Teams did not want to take on that contract while giving up valuable assets for a player who probably is not good enough to be a title winning #1 and too expensive to be a title winning #2.

That's not what Shams reported, for whatever it's worth.

So I asked Google AI what did Shams report...got the following:

The Milwaukee Bucks rejected Boston's initial package of Jaylen Brown and two unprotected first-round picks because they demanded a much steeper haul of assets. According to reports detailing Shams Charania's segments on ESPN, Milwaukee's counter-demands included:
Specific young players: The Bucks wanted promising young pieces, specifically targeting guard Baylor Scheierman and forward Hugo Gonzalez.More draft capital: They demanded additional future first-round draft picks beyond the two offered by Boston. They also asked for more future pick swaps.  Ultimately, the Boston Celtics were unwilling to part with that many young players and future draft assets, which caused the trade talks to completely break down.

If the Bucks had said "Brown, Hugo, 26 #1, 27 #1, 2031 #1 for Giannis and a couple of seconds gets it done.  And if you want, we would include Portis for Hauser.  If you say no or counteroffer, we take Miami's deal"

1) Do you do that at the time?
2) Does Brad do that?
3) Do you do that knowing the alternative is the PG trade?
4) If you make the deal, who do you spend the MLE on?
=======

1) No
2) No
3) Yes
4)  Collin Sexton or Angernee Simons + DeMar DeRozan

Queta / Garza
Giannis / Portis
Tatum / DeRozan
White  / Scheierman
Pritchard / Simons

I agree with all of those answers, especially #1 and #2 being a hell no from me and from Brad.

Since Question #3 is a if hindsight was 20/20 scenario that Brad couldn't have known, I'll posit these additional questions:

If the Bucks had said "Brown, Hugo, 26 #1, 27 #1, 2031 #1 for Giannis and a couple of seconds...

or

If the Bucks had said "Brown, Hugo, 26 #1, 27 #1, 2031 #1 for Giannis and a couple of seconds...

5) Do you do that at the time?
6) Does Brad do that?

=======

5) Yes
6) Yes

Well, I will know who not to trust in the future, if you are relying upon AI.

The reports weren't specific, which is why NG and No Nickname have pushed back against the idea that there was a firm take it or leave it offer on the table. Hugo and/or Scheierman plus draft capital.

Seriously, guys...  Shams is a public figure. His stuff is documented. There's no need to rely on what third parties said that he said, or what AI says that third parties said that he said.

My contention is not that Brad didn?t want to give those up.

I think he would have, but he botched the parlay with the Bucks and they moved on to the Heat without there being one last discussion.

I think that?s a more likely scenario than Brad being unwilling to give up Schierman and a pick swap for example.

Why would you ask AI when you can just search and find the direct quote?

Searching myself would require more time and possibly having to look at multiple links.  Easier to just ask AI.  So what did Shams report if VG and AI are wrong?

Well, I will know who not to trust in the future, if you are relying upon AI.

The reports weren't specific, which is why NG and No Nickname have pushed back against the idea that there was a firm take it or leave it offer on the table. Hugo and/or Scheierman plus draft capital.

Seriously, guys...  Shams is a public figure. His stuff is documented. There's no need to rely on what third parties said that he said, or what AI says that third parties said that he said.

Ok, you make a good point about relying on AI, by the way I don't, but I will be more careful in the future.  So I'll ask again, please provide us with what Shams actually said.

?The breakdown with the Giannis, Boston conversations was very simple. The Celtics did not want to give up Hugo Gonzalez and/or Baylor Scheierman and another draft asset.?

My contention is not that Brad didn?t want to give those up.

I think he would have, but he botched the parlay with the Bucks and they moved on to the Heat without there being one last discussion.

I think that?s a more likely scenario than Brad being unwilling to give up Schierman and a pick swap for example.

I don?t know. The way Brad gushes about Hugo, I think he might be untouchable.

Brad Stevens decision to hold tight to Gonzalez wasn?t a huge surprise given how highly he spoke of the Spanish wing after Bostons season came to a close.

The reality is Hugo had a great rookie year and is, I think, a critical part of us moving forward, Stevens said. Because his athleticism can meet the moment in big games. That?s a real thing. You can see it. His strength is off the charts.

He?s probably the strongest -- he?s one of the strongest guys on our team, pound-for-pound, right now, as a 20-year-old. So, he?s got a bright future.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.
