A move that would help this season

Sign DeMar Derozan.

Now, I know this won't happen, because this would put us about $800k above the tax line, and ownership seems hell bent on resetting the repeater tax.  It's possible to both sign DR and stay below the tax line, but that would require dealing somebody else, or having Derrick White miss certain contract incentives.  Maybe Mike Conley, and then bring him back as a coach?  No idea.  It's likely not happening.

But anyway, Derozan would actually make our team better in a couple of areas where we need it.  First, he actually gets to the line.  His 5.6 FTAs were more than any player currently on our team had last year.  Somebody needs to replace JB attacking the rim, and Derozan would fill that void.

Also, there's often a soft spot in opposing defenses between the 3PT line and the paint.  Most guys don't attempt that shot, because it can be inefficient.   He shot 48% from 10-feet to the 3PT line.  JB actually only shot 44%, on about the same volume of 2PT jumpers.

Despite not being a good 3PT shooter, Derozan is efficient.  He had a .594 TS%.  He's also durable (77 games played) and has both ball-handling and passing skills.

Offensively, he'd fit in pretty well in a base lineup of:

Queta / Robinson / Garza
Tatum / Walsh / Cenac
DeRozan / Hauser / Hugo
George / Scheierman / Harper
White / Pritchard / Conley

He's not perfect.  He's not a 3PT shooter and his defense is inconsistent.  But, he averaged 18.4 points and did it very efficiently, and he + George could collectively do arguably more than Brown could.  For a minimum contract, it would be a heck of an opportunity.

I don't think this team plans any more moves until they can evaluate the progress of the younger talent on the team. It's clear that they are relying on youth to step up. Because of that I feel they are more likely to look towards mid season moves where they then make moves moving a vet and two young players (if they aren't where they expect) for a more established vet, thus want to keep as much cap flexibility as possible.

Was really surprised to see how good a year DeRozan had at 37. His MPG is slowing down but he?s played 74+ games in his last 5 years. So if Brad thinks he?s getting veteran impact from Conley and George, he should be salivating at DeRozan.  But it?s probably true that they won?t go after him.

He will likely be a starter in Denver, though.

I don't think DeRozan would start. I reckon he would come off the bench as a 6th man as a backup SF and allow BOS to keep 2 of 3 - Tatum, PG13, DeRozan - on the floor at all times. With PG13 playing PF when alongside DeRozan.
