40 Years Ago

40 years ago today the Celtics drafted Lenny Bias with the 2nd pick.  Coming off one of the greatest seasons ever.  It was an embarrassment of riches.  We were all smiling like the cat that ate the canary.

It is still one of the biggest "what ifs" in sports history.  It's a sad anniversary.

I was officiating summer basketball team camps at the college I had played at.
A former teammate who had come over to watch some local teams walked over to me mid-game to tell me what had happened.
Best word I can think of to describe my reaction is stunned.

Celts have never quite been the same franchise since that day.
Not sure that Red was ever the same either.

I've said this before on this forum, I was devastated when I heard Len died of an overdose of cocaine.  I live in the DC metro region and, am and was, a fan of Maryland basketball and football.  I was aware of Bias while he was in high school and was extremely happy when he signed with MD.  I followed his career growth for 4 years and by the time he was a senior he was at the top of the food chain.  I also followed Jordan and could not wait until Bias proved he was the better player in the NBA.  He was a very dominant player who had an unbelievable jump shot and had crazy hops.  I still think of him on occasion and wonder what if....So sad.

If Bird didn?t hurt his back, McHale didn?t broke his foot & Bias lived, I truly believe Celtics would had won 3-4 more titles with those 3 alone
