I think there?s too much smoke at this point to not be at least something there.

Also, at what point does the JB relationship - which I think was already a bit rocky after this past year, at least in terms of vision of the future - become untenable after all this noise? There?s not been this much noise about a JB trade since he?s become a star.

I do also find it curious that Himmelsbach- the most in-the-know Celtics best guy - hasn?t come out with anything one way or the other.

To me if there was something real there Himmelsbach would have said something. Like that would be big news.

All we've heard is the same stuff over and over, "Giannis would sign in Boston, Giannis likes Bosston, Giannis is a big Red Sox fan, Giannis prefers Dunc'n to Star Bucks, ect ect ect" followed by "IF the Celtics become involved their offer would be hard to beat."

That just screams being used as leverage to me. The Bucks trying to signal that those making offers need to up their packages to get this done.

That said.... Things can always change. The longer the MIA package stays insufficient for MIL the more possible it is Boston swoops in last minute.

Also: I've heard the "This will damage the Brown relationship" stuff a million times. Literally every offseason he's been in rumors. If Giannis gets traded elsewhere and Boston offer Jaylen a max extension, he'll sign it and this will mean very little imo.  The opening for it mattering is if they refuse extension talks or something like that.

Marc Stein

Quote
The Mavericks, as we've been forecasting for some time in various appearances on the DLLS Mavs podcast, have indeed received trade inquiries for star guard Kyrie Irving, league sources say.

However ... Sources tell The Stein Line that the Mavericks, thus far this offseason, have been messaging to teams that Irving is not available. Detroit and Minnesota are known to have Irving interest, but The Stein Line has learned that Houston ? oft-mentioned as a potential suitor ? has yet to make any overtures to the Mavericks regarding the 34-year-old's availability.

That is interesting. I thought the early signs were that Masai Ujiri was going to trade Kyrie and rebuild around Cooper Flagg and youth. Not so.

Marc Stein on Trey Murphy

Quote
External trade interest in New Orleans' Trey Murphy III remains intense, league sources say. Yet I was told this week that the inquiries have all been of an inbound nature.

League sources say that the Pelicans have not offered Murphy anywhere and that this is the first time their new front office regime headed by Joe Dumars has been truly willing to field offers for Murphy.

As one team interested in Murphy put it to me this week: "They want a lot."

Two teams known to have expressed interest in the 25-year-old sharpshooter, I'm told, are Detroit and Indiana.

I'd love to add Trey Murphy as a 3rd option behind JB and JT. Worth paying a huge price for. I imagine it will be 3-4 first round picks.

Gery Woelfel: My informants told me again this morning a Bucks trade involving Antetokounmpo will likely take place shortly after the conclusion of the NBA Finals.

The Knicks could end the series Saturday night. The latest the Finals could run is Friday, June 19. The NBA draft commences June 23.

Wow, so this is going to happen quickly. 10 days at the latest. If not sooner.

Yes, the Bucks have said for a while that they want this done by the draft.  The NBA discourages teams from making major moves during the finals, since they want the focus on the games.  So that is the window for a Giannis trade.  The saga is nearly over.

Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler is at odds with the team?s front office over the current handling of his restricted free agency, league sources told The Athletic.

Kessler, the 24-year-old who was taken 22nd overall by the Jazz out of Auburn in 2022, was already known to be frustrated by Utah?s choice not to offer him an extension last summer.

And now, with the Jazz choosing to leverage the realities of restricted free agency against him as a way to minimize his market, sources say he is strongly considering the prospect of a basketball future outside of Utah.

I hope someone forces Utah's hand here. I like Kessler. The guy works hard. Works for his teammates. Does the dirty work.

Chicago or LA Lakers look his best bet.

I've been told by various sources that in addition to the LA Clippers' Kawhi Leonard and Memphis' Ja Morant, Wizards point guard Trae Young has emerged as another "big fish" backup option for the Miami Heat in the event that Boston, Portland or some other team manages to outbid Pat Riley and Co. in the trade chase for Antetokounmpo.

I was wondering if Miami would go after De'Aaron Fox as a fallback option. He would be good in their system. A passing big in Bam. Good offensive scheme.

Kessler would be great for the TPE.

Kessler and Queta as a 1-2 combo at center.

While I understand Kessler's frustration, he had to know that Ainge want gonna offer him an extension. He never does unless you're a star

TPE won't even be close to cutting it. Sounds like he wants more in the $30M/yr range. Kessler is nice, but he's not that nice

Not that the Celtics will do this, but they could sign Kessler to a 4 year, $119 million deal using the TPE.  So it absolutely would cut it.  That is too much to pay him, but it is doable.  Would require a deadline dump or two to get back under the tax, but we saw that last year.  4/104 is what the Celtics can offer in a S&T where Utah takes Hauser and a little draft compensation.  Still a bit higher than I would go, personally (Kessler has had himself pumped up by his agents in my opinion), but the Celtics could make a competitive offer if that is their prerogative.
